Aeluma Secures NASA Award to Revolutionize AI Infrastructure and Sensing with Integrated Quantum Dot Lasers

Solving the “Optical Gain” Dilemma

A basic physical constraint has hampered the area of silicon photonics for decades: silicon, the building block of the microelectronics industry, is not very good at generating light. This poses a problem for “on-chip optical gain,” which is required for direct light-based data transmission through silicon processors.

This is addressed by Aeluma’s exclusive platform, which incorporates quantum dot lasers straight onto silicon. Mass-Market Manufacturing via MOCVD

Aeluma’s reliance on Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) is one of its main competitive advantages. For mass-market applications, this high-throughput manufacturing process is already a tried-and-true method. The production of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), the specialized lasers utilized for facial identification in contemporary mobile phones, is one prominent example given by the corporation.
