Microsoft Starts 2026 QuPP for Topological Quantum Computing

Microsoft Starts 2026 QuPP for Topological Quantum Computing

Microsoft has formally launched the 2026 Quantum Pioneers Program (QuPP), a major step in accelerating the development of a fault-tolerant, scalable quantum computer. Dr. Chetan Nayak, Technical Fellow and VP of Quantum Hardware and Systems Engineering, is spearheading this project, which is a strategic call for proposals intended for university researchers who are prepared to delve into the frontiers of topological quantum computing. Microsoft’s goal is to advance the industry beyond incremental advancements by pursuing innovations in computer science, engineering, and physics to address issues that are currently unsolvable for traditional methods.

A Shift Toward Topological and Measurement-Based Paradigms

A paradigm that promises intrinsic error resilience is the foundation of Microsoft’s quantum strategy. Topological quantum computing encodes information in global properties of matter, in contrast to conventional quantum computing techniques that encode information in local states. This method is intended to be more resilient to the noise from the environment that usually affects quantum systems.

The 2026 QuPP particularly emphasizes measurement-based quantum computing as a key area of study to further this aim. This method applies quantum logic by using adaptive measurements on entangled resource states. According to Dr. Nayak, this approach could greatly speed up the process of fault tolerance, improve overall robustness, and simplify the control of quantum systems. To help create a more scalable stack, the QuPP welcomes top academic academics to explore these cutting-edge methods.

Program Eligibility and Academic Focus

The QuPP is designed as a trade competition with a focus on academic institutions. Only university and degree-granting research institution students and professors (assistant and associate) are eligible. Please note that only US, DC, and PR institutions can participate.

Microsoft has put in place stringent participation guidelines to keep the competition focused and fair. Only one proposal per year may be submitted to the program as a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI by an applicant. A proposal may have up to two PIs. Additionally, each participant must be at least twenty-one (21) years old to be eligible. Consent from parents or legal guardians is required for those who have reached the age of 21 but are not yet of majority in their jurisdiction.

Research Objectives and Proposal Requirements

A five-page written research proposal that is in line with Microsoft’s particular quantum interests must be submitted by researchers interested in the QuPP. At least one of these solutions needs to address one of the following five crucial subject areas:

  • New methods for simulating topological qubit dynamics.
  • Investigations of new readout and control methods and parts.
  • Quantum circuit compilation and error correction for measurement-based techniques.
  • NISQ experiments with early failure tolerance and noise.
  • Quantum characterisation, verification, and validation using measurements.

Besides technical specifics, bids must include a statement of need detailing how award monies will be used and what difficulties will be addressed. Applicants must also explain their desired level of Microsoft collaboration and the field effect of their research. Each PI must also submit a brief CV, no more than two pages.

The Financial Stakes: Up to $1 Million in Funding

The 2026 QuPP offers significant incentives for participation. A minimum of one Grand Prize, with an Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of 200,000.00 USD, will be given out by Microsoft per Entry Period. The program does, however, provide for considerable flexibility; Microsoft may, at its sole discretion, award up to four more prizes, possibly raising the total prize pool for a single entry period to 1,000,000.00 USD.

Prizes are typically given to the winner’s educational institution in the form of a check to fund the suggested study. The awards are treated as official research grants for public sector workers in government or education. Strict ethics and gift policies apply to these, and to guarantee compliance with all relevant laws, a gift letter signed by the institution’s ethics officer or attorney is required.

Selection Process and Timeline

The program is split into two separate award periods. The first phase lasted from late 2025 to early 2026, while the second begins at 12:00 a.m. PT on April 13 and ends at 11:59 p.m. PT on April 27, 2026.

A qualified judging panel will examine submissions using three equally weighted criteria:

  • Faculty Merit (33%): Evaluating the PI’s contributions to community involvement and research.
  • Research Merit (33%): Assessing how innovative and potentially significant the proposed study is, as well as how well it fits Microsoft’s mission.
  • Proposal Quality (33%): Evaluating the team’s demonstrated capacity for project execution, organization, and clarity.

Within twenty-one days of the end of the Entry Period, potential winners will be chosen and notified soon after. A second judge will be called in to render a decision in the case of a tie.

Legal and Privacy Considerations

While Microsoft does not claim ownership of the entries, participants should be aware that by submitting a proposal, researchers give the firm an unchangeable, royalty-free, global right to use and analyze the entry for both commercial and non-commercial uses. This includes using the entry in product development or marketing. Winners also consent to Microsoft using their name, image, and hometown for contest advertising.

As quantum computing becomes more competitive, Microsoft’s 2026 Quantum Pioneers Program connects industry and academia. Microsoft is wagering that a cooperative effort to reconsider the fundamentals of quantum logic will yield the next major breakthrough by concentrating on measurement-based topological systems.
