AAMU News: De’Angelo Bailey Represents “The Hill” Nationally

AAMU News Today

Alabama A&M University (AAMU) senior physics student De’Angelo N. Bailey brings national recognition to “The Hill” for his quantum technology research. The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) National Society of Hispanic Physicists (NSHP) Joint Annual Conference in San Jose, California, praised Bailey’s poster presentation.

Alabama A&M has long emphasized its “Points of Pride” in STEM education and student success, and this illustrates its growing research power. Tuscaloosa native Bailey was chosen to present his study by the National Society of Black Physicists after a stringent evaluation procedure, making him one of the nation’s best young scientists.

The Frontier of Quantum Computing

Bailey’s study, “Electrodynamic and Quantum Properties of Josephson Junctions and Performances of Superconducting Qubits and Quantum Computers,” examines the intricate mechanics of quantum computing. AAMU eminent physics professor Dr. Tianxi Zhang mentored his project.

Bailey studies how quantum phenomena affect qubits, the building blocks of quantum computers. Qubits, which use quantum mechanics to exist in multiple states, can process data tenfold faster than regular computer bits.

Bailey’s research relies on Josephson junctions, superconducting quantum circuit electrical switches. He studies how excessive electron mobility in these junctions causes minor thermal consequences. Thermal disruptions can damage a quantum system’s ability to store and keep delicate information, thus scientists must understand them. Bailey is helping make quantum computers more robust and trustworthy worldwide by studying these qualities.

The Power of Mentorship

Bailey commended Alabama A&M’s tough academic atmosphere and his mentor’s individualized guidance for his research achievement. Bailey said Dr. Zhang helped her think critically and approach challenging situations with confidence. He said Dr. Zhang’s supervision helped him bring his study to a national level.

Dr. Zhang’s contribution in Bailey’s journey shows AAMU’s dedication to transformative research for students. As seen by its “Points of Pride” and recent accomplishments in aging missile testing and cybersecurity, the university has long promoted such alliances.

A Robust Academic and Professional Portfolio

Bailey’s San Jose honor comes after years of study and work. He has a large portfolio at AAMU, including:

  • National internships: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory summer research.
  • Strategic Partnerships: AAMU’s AI and quantum programs with IBM include an internship with Howard University’s IBM Quantum Center.
  • College leadership: Society of Physics Students president.
  • Specialized Programs: Active engagement in the PaRS Consortium’s Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (MSIPP).

At regional and national conventions, Bailey has represented Alabama A&M consistently. NSBP conferences in Tennessee and Texas and Alabama Academy of Sciences annual meetings have featured his research. His repeated presence at these events indicates his dedication to physics and STEM education at the university.

Competing at the Highest Level

The intense NSBP poster competition attracts students from HBCUs, large research universities, and top national laboratories. Alabama A&M’s education and research training are worthy of winning an honor in such a broad and competitive setting.

Success in this area is part of the university’s overall excellence. From AACSB accreditation for the College of Business and Public Affairs to Fulbright Program designation as an HBCU Institutional Leader, AAMU is a top educational institution.

Looking Toward the Stars

Bailey plans for his career as he graduates on May 8. During his Master’s in physics on “The Hill” he will study advanced quantum research.

He wants to work at NASA as an astrophysicist and promote quantum technologies. Bailey picked Alabama A&M for its mentorship and support, which helped him reach this national milestone.

Bailey said Alabama A&M University was close to home and offered intellectual and emotional growth. His rise from award-winning undergraduate to graduate researcher motivates students and displays AAMU’s academic excellence.
