RoNaQCI: Romania’s Quantum Network by IonQ & ID Quantique

Introducing Romania’s Historic Quantum Network(RoNaQCI), Protecting More Than 1,500 Kilometres of National Infrastructure with IonQ and ID Quantique

Overview

IonQ has achieved a major cybersecurity milestone in Europe by successfully establishing a vast quantum communication network throughout Romania. This infrastructure uses more than 1,500 kilometers of fiber and Quantum Key Distribution technology to safeguard critical data transfers against sophisticated online attacks. As a vital part of the larger EuroQCI project, the project connects six major metropolitan centers and several academic institutions. This deployment demonstrates that nationwide quantum-secure systems are already operational, protecting several industries, including government, healthcare, and banking. The company’s increasing position as the world’s leading supplier of quantum networking solutions is further supported by this accomplishment.

The Romanian National Quantum Communication Infrastructure (RoNaQCI)

Global leader in quantum computing, IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), said today that ID Quantique (IDQ), a subsidiary of IonQ, has successfully implemented the technology underlying the Romanian National Quantum Communication Infrastructure (RoNaQCI). With this milestone, one of the biggest and most intricate operational Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks in Europe has been established. It is also one of the most important deployments of its sort worldwide, second only to infrastructure in China.

The National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest and RoEduNet, Romania’s national research and education network, formed a strategic cooperation to implement the RoNaQCI project. This countrywide network is constructed only with IonQ’s commercially accessible QKD technology, demonstrating in practice that quantum-secure communications are not just theoretical but also scalable and functional for infrastructure at the national level today.

A New Benchmark for Quantum Security in Europe

In the larger goal of the European Union to safeguard vital communications against existing and future cyberthreats, particularly those brought on by the potential emergence of powerful quantum computers, the deployment marks a significant accomplishment. By using this technology, Romania has established itself as a frontrunner in the EuroQCI project, which intends to construct a flagship quantum communication network throughout the continent.

The Romanian network is enormous in scope. Over 1,500 kilometers are presently covered by 36 quantum-secured lines. More than 20% of all terrestrial quantum communications equipment installed in Europe to date is surprisingly a result of this one country endeavor.

“IonQ is pleased to provide support for this extensive operational quantum-secure communications network that has been implemented throughout Europe,” stated Niccolo de Masi, IonQ’s chairman and CEO. He underlined that the deployment demonstrates QKD’s ability to function at scale to assist national security and safeguard private information in a variety of settings, such as government, healthcare, research, education, and data centers.

Connecting Major Metropolitan Hubs

The RoNaQCI network establishes a high-security backbone that links Bucharest, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, Cluj-Napoca, and Constanța—six of Romania’s major cities. The network distributes encryption keys end-to-end to guarantee the safe transfer of data.

The technological design is advanced and makes use of a network called Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). This enables the transmission of quantum keys in the C-band alongside regular data traffic throughout the network’s urban parts, proving that quantum security can be included into current telecommunications infrastructures.

According to Prof. Pantelimon George Popescu, Head of the Quantum Computing Laboratory at POLITEHNICA Bucharest, the infrastructure creates a “practical foundation for secure data exchange” and advances the European objective of creating interoperable quantum networks.

A Collaborative Achievement

The deployment of RoNaQCI was successful because of a comprehensive team effort. A wide range of public and commercial players, including 12 Romanian institutions, seven research institutes, and three government agencies, joined the initiative. To guarantee uniform performance and compatibility throughout the network, ID Quantique provided all of the QKD systems utilized on this national scale.

Grégoire Ribordy, vice president of science at IonQ and co-founder of ID Quantique, emphasized the persistence of this endeavor, saying that the network is the outcome of more than 20 years of labor to turn quantum key distribution into a reliable infrastructure that businesses and governments can rely on. The project demonstrates that big, intricate networks can be kept up with current telecommunications infrastructure, he continued.

IonQ’s Expanding European Footprint

IonQ has made a number of bold initiatives to speed up quantum-secure communications throughout the EMEA area, including the deployment in Romania. The following are recent firm activities:

  • Slovakia: The first national quantum communication network in that country will be deployed in collaboration with the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
  • Switzerland: Geneva Quantum Network launch.
  • Italy: Accompanying the Q-Alliance in partnership with the Italian authorities.
  • United Kingdom: IonQ’s dedication to European quantum activities is further demonstrated by the appointment of Oxford as its EMEA headquarters.

Leading the Quantum Era

IonQ is breaking milestones in the field of quantum computing in addition to networking. The business reached a global record of 99.99% two-qubit gate integrity in 2025. Anticipated to be the newest in a series of state-of-the-art computers, their upcoming system, IonQ Tempo, will support partners like AstraZeneca, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services in their innovation in areas like financial modeling, materials research, and drug development.

With operations in South Korea, Switzerland, networking, computing, and sensing, and more than 1,300 workers worldwide, IonQ is establishing itself as the leading “merchant supplier” of integrated quantum solutions.

The “Quantum Era” of communication is now a reality rather than a pipe dream, as the RoNaQCI network begins its operational phase and acts as a model for other countries within the EuroQCI framework.
