Slovakia’s skQCI Project Accelerates EuroQCI Goals For EU

Slovakia’s First National Quantum Communication Network Is Deployed by IonQ

skQCI Slovak Quantum Communication Infrastructure

Slovakia’s first national quantum communication network has been deployed, marking a major expansion of IonQ’s European operations. IonQ is a well-known worldwide quantum corporation. This innovative infrastructure was created in partnership with the Institute of Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences (IPSAS), and is overseen by IonQ’s subsidiary ID Quantique (IDQ). The robust hybrid architecture of the new system was specifically created to assist Europe’s larger quantum digital initiatives and fortify Slovakia’s national cybersecurity infrastructure.

The Slovak Quantum Communication Infrastructure (skQCI) project is a significant addition to the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) project. Establishing a safe, quantum-resistant communication network that connects all EU member states and territories is the main objective of EuroQCI. Slovakia’s most important institutions will have their security directly strengthened by the skQCI project’s nationwide integration of quantum-safe technologies.

The skQCI project is a “strategic milestone in fortifying the digital sovereignty of the EU,” Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, who highlighted the deployment’s strategic significance. He stated that they are building a safe, robust, and cutting-edge quantum communication network that can serve as a model for the rest of Europe by fusing IonQ’s quantum-safe networking capabilities with the scientific guidance offered by the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Advanced Hybrid Architecture Secures Key Institutions

The implemented system is designed to link several urban and rural locations throughout Slovakia. It serves four key locations and ensures secure data transit using a cutting-edge QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) design. This method is further enhanced by a hybrid QKD–PQC (post-quantum cryptography) system for cross-border connections.

The skQCI effort, spearheaded by IPSAS, the country’s top scientific research organization, and backed by the Slovak National Centre for Quantum Technologies (QUTE.sk), demonstrates Slovakia’s dedication to bolstering its strategic research and cybersecurity infrastructure. High-ranking national institutions will be safely connected by the new infrastructure inside the Bratislava metropolitan area. The National Security Authority’s facilities, the Slovak Academy of Sciences’ Quantum Pavilion, and the Office of the President (Presidential Palace) are some of these crucial sites.

Mario Ziman, director of the Slovak Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Physics, the partnership not only “places Slovakia at the forefront of quantum communication in Europe” but also amply illustrates the practical uses of incorporating cutting-edge quantum technologies into key national institutions.

IonQ’s Growing European and Global Presence

This Slovakian deployment is a component of IonQ’s ongoing dedication to worldwide quantum expansion. It immediately expands on the business’s recent initiatives, such as the establishment of the Geneva Quantum Network in Switzerland, which links government, business, and academic entities.

Through a number of significant projects, IonQ is expanding its footprint throughout Europe. These include the recent announcement of the Q-Alliance, a collaboration with the Italian government to turn Italy into a quantum powerhouse, and the selection of Oxford as IonQ’s EMEA headquarters. IonQ has also been designated as Korea’s National Quantum Centre of Excellence’s principal quantum partner on a global scale.

IonQ, the top quantum company in the world, is committed to solving the most challenging issues. Partners, including Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA, have benefited greatly from IonQ’s latest generation quantum computers, the IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, which have helped them achieve 20x performance results. In 2025, the business achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate integrity, setting a new world record for quantum computing performance.

To spur innovation across a range of industries, including medical development, materials research, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense, IonQ is accelerating its technology roadmap to deliver systems with 2 million qubits by 2030. The company is positioned as a pioneer in creating the future quantum internet, with its work in quantum networking demonstrated by the skQCI project. IonQ continues to operate in many countries, including several U.S. states, South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

IPSAS: A Legacy of Quantum Research

Slovakia’s top scientific organization, the Institute of Physics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IPSAS), is committed to promoting excellence in basic and strategic research in a wide range of fields. With more than 25 years of research devoted to quantum technologies, IPSAS has made a substantial contribution to the nation’s technological leadership and innovative potential.

In the past, IPSAS has been recognized for its theoretical accomplishments, such as quantum-enhanced elections, protocols for quantum secret sharing, and algorithms for quantum cloning and programming. The institute recently launched a program for experimental quantum photonics communication. In order to ensure the successful implementation of quantum technologies and developments, this initiative seeks to enhance Slovakia’s portfolio and competence. IPSAS has been a part of the Slovak National Centre for Quantum Technologies since 2022.

IonQ’s Financial and Strategic Footprint

Despite not yet attaining profitability, IonQ, which is presently valued at $18.7 billion, has shown impressive sales growth, with a 113% increase over the last twelve months. Financial records show that the corporation is in a healthy financial condition, with a balance sheet that shows more cash than debt. The investment bank JPMorgan has recognized IonQ as a pioneer in the emerging field of quantum computing and began covering the business with a Neutral rating and a price objective of $47.

In a recent strategic move, IonQ has teamed up with the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) to use quantum technologies to promote therapeutic development. By 2026, the first projects will start in Sweden and Canada. In order to improve operational capabilities in difficult conditions, the company also formed a strategic agreement with Heven AeroTech to incorporate quantum technologies into hydrogen-powered drones. Additionally, IonQ just named Scott Millard as its new Chief Business Officer. Millard previously held a top leadership position in AI sales at Dell Technologies. Together, these actions highlight IonQ’s continued dedication to broadening its technological and commercial reach in several high-impact industries.
