QDm.1 Live at Integrated Service Technology (iST) in Taiwan

QuantumDiamonds GmbH has formally announced the successful deployment of its QDm.1 system at Integrated Service Technology (iST) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, marking a paradigm shift for the global semiconductor testing business. An important validation of quantum sensing technology in high-volume industrial environments, this crucial installation, which was announced on 2026, represents the Munich-based company’s first operational foothold in Asia.

A Strategic Foothold in the Global “Epicenter”

As QuantumDiamonds looks to address some of the most enduring obstacles in contemporary chip fabrication, the deployment at Integrated Service Technology is positioned as a “defining moment” for the company. QuantumDiamonds is putting its technology in the hands of the most advanced manufacturing operations in the world by establishing a presence in Hsinchu, a city that is considered to be the center of Taiwan’s famed semiconductor cluster.

Taiwan is the “epicenter” of modern semiconductor manufacturing, according to Kevin Berghoff, CEO of QuantumDiamonds, who highlighted the significance of the location. He pointed out that the collaboration with iST, one of the most reputable independent failure analysis labs in the area, is evidence that quantum sensing is now a tool prepared for the most challenging real-world settings in the industry rather than a lab curiosity.

Addressing the Yield Loss Crisis Amid AI Demand

The semiconductor supply chain is under unprecedented strain at the time of the QDm.1 system’s arrival in Asia. Yield loss continues to be an unaffordable barrier throughout the continent’s quickly changing terrain, frequently impeding innovation and driving up production prices. The increasing demand for AI-capable gear has made this problem worse and widened the global memory chip shortage.

QuantumDiamonds’ technology tackles these issues head-on by offering useful intelligence. This enables manufacturers to improve entire production workflows in addition to identifying and removing faulty chips, resulting in notable increases in productivity and efficiency.

The Science of Quantum Diamond Microscopy

The unique Quantum Diamond Microscopy (QDM) technology is the central component of the QDm.1 system. This novel method maps electrical currents with micrometer accuracy by using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamonds. The outcome is the first integrated quantum sensing device created especially for analyzing semiconductor failures.

The system’s capacity to produce high-resolution, non-destructive 3D imaging of existing channels is one of its biggest benefits. This feature is very important for contemporary, extremely intricate semiconductor architectures, such as:

  • 2.5D and 3D packages
  • Backside power networks
  • Wide bandgap materials, such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC)

The QDm.1 provides a “fundamentally new way” to probe complex devices, according to Dr. Sean Shen, Director of Failure Analysis Engineering Division at iST. Dr. Shen claims that the system’s capacity to function in three dimensions at speeds compatible with current commercial workflows is revolutionary for resolving high-density connection issues.

Global Expansion and the European Chips Act

After a successful installation in the United States and an expansion into Asia in March, QuantumDiamonds’ ambitious worldwide development strategy continues with the installation in Taiwan. With systems installed in Europe, the US, and now Asia, nine of the top ten chipmakers in the world are currently working with QuantumDiamonds, demonstrating the company’s already extensive influence.

The corporation, which began as a spin-out from the Technical University of Munich in 2022, has quickly grown from a research-focused organization to an industrial powerhouse. This expansion is supported by significant investment. In Munich, QuantumDiamonds is presently investing €152 million to build the first production facility for quantum-based semiconductor inspection in history. The European Chips Act significantly supports this enormous infrastructural investment, underscoring the technology’s acknowledged significance to sovereign technical capabilities.

The Path Ahead for iST and QuantumDiamonds

By providing features that were previously unavailable in the market, Integrated Service Technology adoption of the QDm.1 solidifies its position as a leader in independent testing. At the Hsinchu location, the system is already fully functional and prepared to assist clients working at the cutting edge of chip complexity.

According to QuantumDiamonds’ Managing Director APAC, Peter Lemmens, the iST collaboration offers a “outstanding platform” to illustrate the usefulness of quantum sensing. The Hsinchu installation is anticipated to be a shining example of the next generation of failure analysis technology as demand in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea’s semiconductor ecosystems continues to rise.

In addition to reaching a commercial milestone, this deployment has given the semiconductor industry a potent new tool against yield loss, which might hasten the creation of the next generation of AI and high-performance computer systems.
