KISTI and IonQ to Found South Korea’s First Quantum Centre

The first national quantum computing center of excellence will be established in South Korea by KISTI and IonQ as part of the country’s quantum leap.

The founding of its first National Quantum Computing Centre of Excellence puts South Korea in a position to significantly advance the global quantum landscape. Following the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information’s (KISTI) winning multi-million dollar government award for the “Quantum Computing Service and Utilization System Construction Project,” this important endeavour was launched. KISTI has selected IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a prominent commercial quantum computing and networking business, as its key quantum technology partner, forming the foundation of this ambitious endeavour.

An important step in securing South Korea’s leadership in the quickly developing field of quantum technology is the collaboration. KISTI will play a key role in this initiative by spearheading the creation and management of an extensive infrastructure for quantum computing research and services. Specifically created to serve a wide range of users, this platform supports enterprise applications as well as scholarly research nationwide.

A deal with KISTI is projected to see IonQ, known for its state-of-the-art quantum systems, provide a sophisticated 100-qubit quantum system. The goal of this potent system is to support cutting-edge research and enable South Korea to develop industrially relevant quantum computing capabilities. The cooperative development of a hybrid quantum-classical execution environment is another aspect of IonQ and KISTI’s cooperation. Researchers and developers across the country will have easy remote access to next-generation quantum systems because to this cutting-edge environment’s integration into a private cloud infrastructure. Mega zone Cloud, one of South Korea’s leading cloud service and infrastructure providers, has also been recognized as a crucial project partner to complement IonQ’s quantum competence.

It will be honoured to support KISTI’s pioneering efforts to establish a world-leading quantum service infrastructure in Korea, IonQ CEO Niccolo de Masi stated, excited about the relationship. Calling this initiative “a significant investment in Korea’s research and innovation ecosystem,” he further highlighted its deep impact and expressed IonQ’s delight in being chosen to supply the technology and knowledge needed to achieve its full potential.

This view was mirrored by KISTI President Dr. Sik Lee, who emphasized the expected advantages for South Korea. The partnership with IonQ is expected to accumulate experience in the operation, service, and utilization of quantum platforms nationwide, said Dr. Lee. “The development of quantum computer utilization research and the industrial ecosystem in Korea” is another area he emphasized KISTI’s dedication to.

This historic announcement builds on IonQ and KISTI’s recent MoU to advance South Korea’s quantum economy. IonQ is expanding in the area with schools like Seoul National University and Sungkyunkwan University, and companies like Hyundai, SKT, and Intellian Technologies. This strategic move reflects IonQ’s dedication to Asia and quantum innovation worldwide.

About IonQ

IonQ is a prominent commercial quantum computing and networking firm committed to providing high-performance systems that address the most challenging problems in the world. The most recent developments in the company’s range of state-of-the-art systems are represented by the IonQ Forte and IonQ Forte Enterprise, its current generation of quantum computers. Already, these systems have enabled clients and partners, including major players in the industry like Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA, to attain impressive 20x performance outcomes in their respective domains.

By 2030, IonQ hopes to have the most potent quantum computers in the world, with an incredible 2 million qubits. Company efforts are focused on this purpose. This future capability is expected to inspire innovation in defense, logistics, financial modelling, materials research, medicinal development, and cybersecurity. Due to its quantum networking advancements beyond computers, IonQ is a prominent player in the coming quantum internet.

About KISTI

Leading the way in South Korea’s quantum computing developments is KISTI (Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information). KISTI’s “Quantum Computing Service and Utilization System Construction Project” has resulted in a government award worth several million dollars. This financing is essential to its plan to create the first National Quantum Computing Centre of Excellence in South Korea.

KISTI, the project leader, will create and run a complete quantum computing research and service platform that will support academic and enterprise applications across the country. IonQ is KISTI’s main supplier of quantum technology for this project, and Megazone Cloud is its cloud infrastructure partner. Additionally, IonQ and KISTI want to work together to create a hybrid quantum-classical execution environment. This collaboration would enable KISTI to gain experience in operating quantum platforms and support Korea’s industry environment and research on quantum computer utilization, said Dr. Sik Lee, president of KISTI. This expands on a previous partnership between KISTI and IonQ, which includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was recently inked.
