Florida Quantum to Accelerate the State’s Quantum Economy

Florida Starts “Florida Quantum” Initiative to Coordinate and Quicken Quantum Economy in the State

Florida Quantum

The establishment of Florida Quantum, a major new statewide project aimed at organizing, attracting, and accelerating quantum innovation and investment throughout the state, was announced by leaders from Florida’s venture capital and technology sectors. A coordinated, strategic effort to position Florida as a national leader in the quantum field, which is thought to be essential to future national security and economic competitiveness, is signaled by this endeavor.

The news was given during the Tech Basel AI Summit hosted by eMerge Americas in Miami. Florida Quantum is a non-governmental, privately run initiative to serve as a focal point for coordination. Its objective is to bring Florida’s currently dispersed quantum activities under a unified, strategic framework to unite and accelerate the growth of the state’s expanding quantum sector. A combination of influential figures from government, industry, education, and national security make up Florida Quantum. Together, they seek to establish the state as a world leader in quantum technology and information science.

A Unified, Private-Sector-Led Strategy for Quantum Leadership

Matt Cimaglia, Founder & Managing Partner of Quantum Coast Capital, and Tony Jimenez, Managing Partner of Medina Ventures, are co-leading the effort. FloridaCommerce supports this endeavor, which works with the 15-university Florida Alliance for Quantum Technology (FAQT).

As Matt Cimaglia pointed out, “Florida has long been a launchpad for technological revolutions, from the early days of computing to the modern aerospace era,” highlighting the state’s lengthy history of technological advancement. With the words, “With quantum, organizing early to ensure Florida doesn’t just participate, lead,” he emphasized the importance of early cooperation in the quantum age. Florida Quantum is “a bold step by the private sector” to develop and bolster the state’s quantum ecosystem, according to Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. The freshly launched 15-university FAQT’s mission is supplemented by this endeavor.

Four Core Pillars Driving the Quantum Ecosystem

Connecting government and private sector initiatives to improve Florida’s position in the global quantum arena is the foundation of Florida Quantum’s all-encompassing approach. To create a strong quantum environment, the project concentrates on several key areas:

Attracting Commercial Ventures and Shaping Investment

By providing a single, obvious point of entry, one of the main objectives is to encourage and enable quantum enterprises to establish and grow their operations within Florida. The project is centered on developing investment plans, especially to draw in the necessary capital for quantum businesses and research collaborations. Medina Ventures and Quantum Coast Capital, two Florida-based venture capital firms that focus on funding deep tech and quantum startups, are important partners in this field. Crucial partners are strategic conveners such as eMerge Americas, which act as a bridge between talent and capital and act as a catalyst for innovation.

Accelerating Innovation and Bridging Industry Connection

Florida Quantum aims to coordinate federal and state participation. It intends to form alliances with accelerator programs and create avenues for funding quantum-focused businesses and research. In order to promote cooperation and innovation, a primary goal is to close the gap between academic research and the demands of the corporate sector.

Developing a Skilled Workforce

The project is committed to matching the unique needs of the developing quantum economy with Florida’s talent pipeline. As a critical catalyst for long-lasting workforce change, the program places a high priority on gaining genuine commercial traction while supporting the FAQT’s scholarly work. Supporting early K–12 exposure to fundamental quantum concepts is another aspect of this workforce development strategy.

Shaping Policy and Awareness

In order to encourage industrial expansion and draw top personnel to the state, Florida Quantum seeks to harmonize state policy and regulatory frameworks. By emphasizing policy consciousness, the program guarantees that state policies align with both domestic and global quantum concerns.

Leveraging Florida’s Unique Assets and Partnerships

The state already has a number of assets that give it a distinct edge in supporting the full quantum lifecycle, from complicated modelling and validation to material synthesis, according to Florida Quantum’s leadership. The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, the ISS National Laboratory, which conducts microgravity tests, and the University of Florida’s potent HiPerGator supercomputer are examples of these fundamental resources.

Venture capital firms, business executives, academic researchers, and national security experts make up the varied mix of founding members and partners.

Aligning with Critical National and Global Efforts

With the help of its 15 top institutions and powerful commercial sector leaders in vital fields like aerospace, defense, and medical sciences, Florida is aiming to become a global center for quantum research, and the establishment of Florida Quantum is a part of that effort. Under the White House’s Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP), which prioritizes quantum technologies within the Critical Technology Areas, the effort is in line with federal directives. Through the creation of this program, Florida hopes to improve the nation’s supply chain for these vital technologies.

Secretary Kelly also emphasized that bringing together public and private partners will boost financial services, cybersecurity, health advances, national defense, and the future of logistics and transportation.

Additionally, the endeavor aligns with the worldwide acknowledgement of the revolutionary possibilities of quantum technology, particularly given that 2025 has been declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025). With the creation of Florida Quantum, the state is now directly competing with other states that have already started large-scale quantum projects, including Maryland and Illinois. Analysts generally agree that nations that organize early will have a competitive edge in luring businesses to this high-stakes, quickly evolving technology sector.

When Florida unites its own scientific and commercial forces early, it maximizes its appealing ability to attract the necessary talent and investment to dominate a globally competitive field. This is similar to organizing a powerful magnet.
