COMPUTAEX Expands Quantum Ambitions with QURECA

COMPUTAEX Strengthens Quantum Strategy Through Strategic Alliance with QURECA

QURECA, a corporation that specializes in quantum technologies, and the Extremadura Foundation for Computing and Advanced Technologies (COMPUTAEX), a public non-profit organization founded by the Junta de Extremadura in 2009, have formally signed a collaboration agreement. The goal of this collaboration is to obtain technical and strategic consulting services. The deal reaffirms COMPUTAEX’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge technology and bolstering the local quantum ecosystem.

The National Quantum Technologies Strategy 2025-2030 recognizes COMPUTAEX as a strategic asset and highlights the foundation’s future role in running one of the nation’s quantum emulators.

The Regional Quantum Capacity Contribution of QURECA

As part of the agreement, QURECA will help with technical decision-making and offer expert assistance in building strategies for regional quantum capabilities. This assistance covers a number of crucial areas:

  • Examining novel quantum computing research avenues that the innovation center can utilize.
  • Offering specific instruction.
  • Establishing partnerships to participate in R&D & i calls.
  • Developing market research and technology insight to find pertinent opportunities and use cases in a range of industrial industries.
  • Taking part in initiatives to spread knowledge about science.

QURECA seeks to link public administration, academia, and business by providing professional services, resources, and training to support the expansion of the global quantum technology ecosystem.

Quantum Commitments and COMPUTAEX Infrastructure

The Extremadura Supercomputing Centre, which provides cutting-edge infrastructure and professional assistance for scientific, technological, and commercial initiatives, is managed by COMPUTAEX. The services offered include cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data science, quantum computing, high-performance computing (HPC), and the internet of things (IoT).

The Center is a part of the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) and has been designated as a Singular Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. More than 250 R&D&i projects have received support from the Center since its founding.

COMPUTAEX is already involved in significant projects related to quantum research. At the national level, it is part of the Quantum Spain project, which aims to develop a quantum computer for the public and scientific sectors. It is in charge of the QCO4HPC (Quantum Computing Applied to Performance and Energy Consumption Optimization in Supercomputing Infrastructures) project on a regional level. To further its research, COMPUTAEX also maintains international partnerships, such as access to Fujitsu quantum computing capabilities in Japan.

Planned Future Growth

LUSITANIA supercomputers are presently housed in the Data Processing Center. COMPUTAEX intends to make a major expansion in the upcoming months in order to surpass the Petaflop computing power level. A thousand trillion (10¹⁵) floating-point operations per second is equal to one Petaflop. This expansion consists of increasing its capabilities through the PERTE Chip initiative and adding the LUSITANIA IV supercomputer, a cluster based on MareNostrum 4. Most importantly, a next-generation quantum emulator will be installed as part of the preparations.

The company is “delighted to be able to support COMPUTAEX and the Extremadura community to establish themselves as a key ecosystem in quantum technologies,” said Araceli Venegas Gómez, Director of QURECA.

Concerning COMPUTAEX

In 2009, the Regional Government of Extremadura established the Extremadura Computing and Advanced Technologies Foundation (COMPUTAEX), a non-profit public organisation, to oversee the Extremadura Supercomputing Centre and encourage the use of advanced communications, information technologies, and high-performance computing as a catalyst for the region’s sustainable socioeconomic growth.

Concerning QURECA

To promote the expansion of the worldwide quantum technology ecosystem, QURECA provides expert services, materials, and training. By developing training opportunities, offering specialized courses, and planning events that promote cooperation and creativity, it unites business, academia, and government. It assists organizations in examining the quantum landscape and contributes to the accessibility, interest, and impact of quantum technologies through outreach and consulting. Its goal is to establish a robust, interconnected, and welcoming worldwide quantum community.
