DoW CIO & SandboxAQ Launch 5Y post-quantum cyber defense

SandboxAQ and the Department of War CIO Sign a Five-Year Contract to Put Post-Quantum Cyber Defense into Practice

DoW CIO and SandboxAQ

The Department of War (DoW) Chief Information Officer (CIO) and SandboxAQ, a leader in AI and cybersecurity solutions and a business that offers solutions at the nexus of AI and quantum techniques, have announced a major five-year partnership. Through the implementation of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards and the application of post-quantum cyber defense techniques, this collaboration aims to strengthen the DoW’s cyber resilience.

The agreement’s major objective is to update the DoW’s cybersecurity procedures and guarantee that defense systems continue to withstand advanced AI-driven attacks, as well as the potential danger of quantum computing. RSA and ECC, two popular conventional public-key encryption techniques, may be compromised by quantum computing. The new partnership improves overall cyber readiness against sophisticated threats and acts as a starting point for a planned transition to PQC.

Addressing the Quantum Imperative and AI Threats

The deliberate decision to modernize cybersecurity infrastructure coincides with growing pressure on federal agencies to update security. The DoW CIO must give post-quantum security top priority in order to improve preparedness due to the growing complexity and intensity of assaults. The agreement specifically addresses the serious “store now, decrypt later” danger, in which adversaries gather private information now to deploy a potent quantum computer to decrypt it later.

There is an immediate risk of quantum compromise; warnings indicate that quantum computers may be able to compromise existing cryptography as early as 2029. This urgency is echoed by Gartner, which warns that by 2029, quantum computing will make standard cryptography dangerous, making the transfer to PQC an essential step that agencies must take now. This agreement also follows National Security Memorandums, which mandate federal agencies to employ new encryption methods and algorithms that are quantum error-resistant and NIST-authorized.

Deploying AQtive Guard: Strategy and Methodology

The DoW CIO will use SandboxAQ’s AQtive Guard platform as part of the arrangement, utilizing SandboxAQ’s technology and experience to speed up the process of finding and cataloguing cryptographic assets in the DoW environment. Across all of its systems, this endeavor offers thorough, automated cryptographic discovery and inventory (ACDI).

One of the most important first steps for a planned transition to PQC is to identify and inventory all cryptographic assets inside the DoW’s environment. Constant insight into cryptographic assets, dependencies, and vulnerabilities is offered by the AQtive Guard platform. Organizations can effectively manage assets with this centralized platform for managing cryptographic security, which also gives the department the ability to foresee and thwart new risks, such as sophisticated AI-powered attacks.

The migration strategy makes use of the crypto-agile framework of the AQtive Guard platform, which permits the gradual substitution of quantum-resistant algorithms for the current public-key encryption. The present deployment within the DoW comes after SandboxAQ’s capabilities in quantum-resistant cryptography were successfully shown in an earlier prototype project using the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) QRC PKI program.

Government Commitment and Future Scope

Regarding the significance of the partnership, SandboxAQ CEO Jack Hidary said that the DoW CIO is committed to updating its cybersecurity procedures. According to Hidary, the deal demonstrates the government’s resolve to develop cryptographic standards that counteract threats from both AI and the quantum world.

As enemy cyber capabilities develop and the long-term threat to classical encryption intensifies, the DoW CIO is giving post-quantum security top priority to bolster preparedness. It is anticipated that the partnership will open the door for other DoW agencies to use and utilize AQtive Guard, creating a fundamental understanding of their cryptographic footprint across the entire department. SandboxAQ took delight in helping the DoW CIO maintain the resilience, interoperability, and agility of defense systems.

SandboxAQ is a business-to-business (B2B) firm that broke away from Alphabet Inc. as a stand-alone, growth-backed enterprise that offers solutions in several industries, including financial services and life sciences. The government’s larger commitment to advancing cryptographic standards is strengthened by this collaboration.
