Cerca Magnetics Gain Clinical Growth After £3.8M Investment

The University of Nottingham School of Physics and Astronomy’s innovative spinout Cerca Magnetics has reported a successful £3.8 million ($4.75 million) Series A fundraising round. With this large investment, which was spearheaded by Guinness Ventures, the company’s post-money valuation is £30 million. The funding is intended for a crucial stage of the company’s expansion as it works to turn its wearable quantum brain scanner from a research instrument into a standard clinical diagnostic tool.

A New Era of Neuroimaging

Cerca Magnetics’ innovative method to magnetoencephalography (MEG) is at its heart. To use traditional brain scanning technology, patients must frequently stay motionless within large, stationary machines. Patients with mobility disabilities may find these settings challenging, and youngsters may find them frightening. By substituting these inflexible devices with wearable, lightweight sensors called optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), Cerca Magnetics has found a solution.

The electrical activity of the brain produces extremely weak magnetic fields, which these quantum sensors can precisely measure. The device permits patients to move freely during scans because these sensors are housed in a wearable style. This innovation is especially revolutionary for the field of pediatrics because it has made brain imaging on infants possible for the first time, greatly expanding the availability of modern neuroimaging for kids.

Rapid Commercial Momentum

Even though the product is quite technical, Cerca Magnetics has shown remarkable commercial success in a short amount of time. 19 systems have already been sold by the company to esteemed neuroscience facilities in 12 nations, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Over the last three years, an annual sales growth of over 100% has been driven by this global presence.

Leading universities in the world are currently using the technology for important and varied research. Researchers at Toronto’s The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) are using the wearable scanner to study autism, which requires flexible, non-restrictive scanning. The technology is also crucial to a £2.8 million UK Ministry of Defence mobile platform to assess blast exposure’s effects on military personnel.

Strategic Expansion and Clinical Goals

The main purposes of the Series A funding are to enable international expansion, manufacturing scale-up, and clinical approval. Clinical approval procedures in the US and UK are underway as the corporation integrates healthcare. This regulatory milestone is necessary for hospitals to diagnose and treat dementia, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy with the technology.

Cerca Magnetics CEO and co-founder David Woolger said the cash allowed the company to “move decisively into clinical applications.” He stated that improving access to sophisticated imaging for neurological problem diagnosis and treatment is the ultimate goal.

Industry Backing and Future Outlook

Guinness Ventures’ choice to spearhead the funding round demonstrates their high belief in Cerca’s capacity to dominate the upcoming neuroimaging market. Ashley Abrahams, Head of Origination at Guinness Ventures, stated that by fusing “affordable real-world usability” with in-depth scientific knowledge, the company is filling a “clear unmet need.” Abrahams went on to say that he thinks Cerca is in a strong position to lead the world in neuroimaging.

The company continues to leverage its academic background from the University of Nottingham as it expands its production capabilities to satisfy growing demand. Cerca Magnetics could revolutionize brain management by merging quantum physics and clinical medicine. With the successful Series A financing, the company has the means to bring its life-changing technology to the world’s most vulnerable patients.
