The Factory Phase: Alice and Bob Open a Huge New Facility to Scale Quantum “Cats”

Alice & Bob Company

The shift from experimental physics to industrial-scale engineering is sometimes referred to be the “valley of death” for deep tech firms in the quickly changing field of quantum computing. With the opening of one of Europe’s biggest facilities for quantum engineering, Alice & Bob, a pioneer in the creation of error-correcting “cat qubits,” hopes to close that gap. The company’s transition from a lab setting focused on research to what they refer to as a “pre-industrial” manufacturing phase marks a strategic change.

For many years, Alice & Bob worked in a conventional laboratory with the iconic Eiffel Tower in the background. But according to the business, pure science is now a logistical hurdle. Now that the basic physics underlying their cat qubits has been shown in prototypes, attention must turn to developing the infrastructure needed to bring these devices to market.

Scaling Beyond the Lab

The new facility’s size represents a major advancement. The new location can hold twenty dilution refrigerators, whereas the old lab could only hold three. This enlargement offers a threefold increase in chip capacity and a step toward manufacturing uniformity, so it’s not just about space.

A dedicated, cutting-edge cleanroom is at the center of this expansion. The purpose of this area is to create the next generation of cat-qubit processors, which will enable the simultaneous operation and real-time communication of dozens of chips. The “reproducibility problem,” which many quantum engineers see as their main worry, can only be solved with the help of this infrastructure.

The Reproducibility Frontier

The industry’s “next frontier” is consistency, since the early years of quantum computing concentrated on the genius of managing a single qubit. The goal of Alice & Bob’s new facility is to overcome the difficult challenges of producing, integrating, cooling, and repeatedly calibrating qubits. Making a hundred qubits perform consistently across various chips and cooling cycles is now more difficult than merely understanding the fundamental physics.

Months of labor might be derailed by even the tiniest environmental element. A quantum calculation can be rendered incorrect by a single misaligned link wire, a dust particle, or a temperature fluctuation of only a thousandth of a degree. The business intends to steer clear of the manufacturing issues that have historically hampered deep tech startups by constructing this transition infrastructure today.

When the Building Becomes the Hardware

The notion that the computer and its surroundings are inextricably linked at the millikelvin scale is among Alice & Bob’s most remarkable discoveries. The facility itself becomes an extension of the quantum hardware in this regime. The new location has vibration-tested foundations, unique mu-metal shielding to prevent the Earth’s magnetic field, and an air filtration system that recycles the air sixty times per minute to preserve the delicate cat qubits.

To avoid calculation corruption, every part of the cryostat, including the final screw, must be non-magnetic. “This isn’t infrastructure supporting the hardware,” the company notes, “it is the hardware, extended outward into the building”. This approach changes the emphasis from just producing chips to producing the exact circumstances needed for the chips to operate at their best.

The Vision of “Pre-Industrial”

The new location is described by Alice & Bob as “pre-industrial” rather than completely industrial. Although shipping quantum machines to consumers worldwide is the ultimate objective, the market for these devices is still tiny, and installations are frequently custom-made and take years to complete.

Nonetheless, the technologies that are presently being developed internally are planned with their ultimate migration in mind. These computers must be designed robust and adaptable, together with a strict set of guidelines for hosting them, to guarantee their survival in consumer settings. The goal of this “learning at scale” stage is to refine the shipping and installation procedures before the peak of commercial demand.

Additionally, the corporation has hinted at the possibility of fresh announcements about their work in June.

A Novel Type of Engineer

The company’s recruiting requirements have also altered as a result of the shift in emphasis from research to manufacturing. Although physicists controlled the first several decades of quantum computing, Alice & Bob think engineers who can turn that physics into a repeatable procedure will rule the following decade.

A diversified team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and building managers currently work at the facility, juggling the demands of cleanroom regulations, dilution refrigeration, and signal chain propagation. The corporation has stated that they are “wide open” to hiring people who are prepared to take on these logistical challenges as they work to find a solution for how to construct quantum computers at scale.

The ultimate objective of this enormous infrastructure investment is to demonstrate that quantum computing can transcend the “lab-environment” and enter the domain of dependable, repeatable products. Alice & Bob is paving the way for the next phase of quantum engineering by having the ability to test if a hundred qubits can cooperate.
