Veeco News: MBE Systems Installed For Quantum Research

Veeco Secures New MBE Deployments in Denmark and South Korea, Accelerating Global Quantum Research

Veeco News

With major new victories for its Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) systems, Veeco Instruments Inc., a world leader in advanced semiconductor and compound semiconductor process equipment, has firmly established its fundamental position in the rapidly expanding quantum technology industry. The new installations, which are located at Yeungnam University in South Korea and Sparrow Quantum in Denmark, highlight the growing international dedication to creating materials essential for the upcoming generation of quantum computing and communication technologies.

Veeco’s established market position as a reliable facilitator of quantum innovation is strengthened by these deployments. With these acquisitions, the company’s global presence currently consists of over 30 MBE systems devoted to research and development (R&D) and quantum technology development. These cutting-edge instruments are necessary for the accurate creation of quantum devices, which necessitates the management of material layers down to the atomic level a capability in which MBE technology shines.

Precision Engineering: Veeco’s Systems Chosen for Cutting-Edge Research

Both new deployments point to different but equally important areas of quantum research.

Veeco’s state-of-the-art GENxcel R&D MBE system was chosen by Sparrow Quantum, a leading quantum photonics business in Denmark. The development of high-performance quantum dot single-photon emitters (SPEs) will be greatly aided by this high-performance system.

SPEs are regarded as an essential tool for creating useful quantum hardware. The collaboration will help the expanding fields of secure quantum communication networks and photonic quantum computing, where controlled and dependable single photon emission is critical. Sparrow Quantum was able to expedite its approach from experimental designs to commercial-grade quantum components because to the GENxcel system’s remarkable material quality and quick research cycles.

This system’s strategic location in Denmark is noteworthy. The country is establishing itself as a European centre for quantum communication and photonic quantum computing by actively utilising its long history of competence in physics and photonics. Through this collaboration, Veeco will be directly involved in the development of photonic chips and quantum communication protocols, which are essential for building unbackable communication networks and incredibly quick computer architectures.

Meanwhile, Veeco’s GEN10 MBE technology is being used by the esteemed Yeungnam University in South Korea to increase its academic research capacity. This device will help the institution expand its in-depth study of quantum dot and nanostructure qualities. Numerous projects aimed at creating next-generation quantum technology are supported by this study. Creating innovative sensor designs and durable solid-state quantum memory components are examples of possible uses. The GEN10 system is praised for its adaptability and capacity to facilitate a wide variety of materials science applications, which makes it a perfect option for educational establishments with extensive research mandates.

This growth in MBE capabilities helps South Korea achieve its objective of quickly mobilising resources to establish a leadership position in fundamental quantum research and semiconductor manufacture through organizations like Yeungnam University. This guarantees a pool of highly qualified engineers with in-depth understanding of materials who are prepared to translate innovative research into practical uses.

The Atomic-Scale Imperative of Molecular Beam Epitaxy

These important pioneers’ choice of MBE systems is evidence of the technology’s unparalleled potential in the realm of quantum materials science. An ultra-high vacuum (UHV) deposition method called molecular beam epitaxy is used to create thin films of single-crystal materials layer by atomic layer.

Beams of atoms or molecules are produced by heating elemental source materials in the MBE chamber’s very vacuum environment. After reaching a substrate without any obstacles, these beams condense and organize into a highly structured crystalline structure. Researchers can precisely manage the material’s composition and thickness with this meticulous, slow-growth approach and in situ monitoring methods. In addition to being desirable, this degree of control is strictly necessary for the manufacturing of quantum devices.

In order to successfully utilize quantum effects, quantum devices like the quantum dots being developed by Sparrow Quantum and Yeungnam University rely on trapping individual electrons or excitons in tiny structures. At this size, even a small change or flaw in the crystal lattice can ruin the delicate quantum coherence required, making the device worthless.

The Matthew Marek, Senior Director of Marketing for Veeco’s MBE Product Line, the victories demonstrate Veeco’s dedication to using precision thin-film deposition to advance quantum computing. He stated that the business’s technologies are “trusted by top quantum innovators worldwide for delivering the material quality, process control, and scalability essential to push the boundaries of quantum materials, from early-stage R&D to scalable device production” .

Strategic Importance in an Exploding Global Market

These deployments coincide with a sharp increase in governmental and private investment in the quantum technology ecosystem worldwide. McKinsey and Company’s estimate indicates that in 2024, a total of $2 billion was invested in quantum computing startups alone.

Even more startling is the fact that public investment announcements, which frequently reflect national strategies, increased to an astounding 10 billion in early 2025.

Veeco is actively collaborating with top quantum inventors as global momentum grows to address the intricate materials science issues that presently operate as a major barrier to mainstream quantum commercialization. Veeco is enabling researchers to push the limits of quantum device performance, scalability, and eventually commercial viability with its cutting-edge MBE and atomic layer deposition solutions.

Veeco’s capacity to supply the specialized equipment required to produce these intricate materials is seen as a strategic enabling of national quantum strategies globally, in addition to being an economic success. In a market that is quickly influencing the direction of information security and computation, the organization is assisting innovators in tackling the difficult materials science problems.
