Quandela Powers Europe’s Lucy Quantum Breakthrough

In this article, we will know that, Quandela leads Europe’s quantum leap with Lucy, a hybrid HPC-quantum system accelerating AI, science, and industrial innovation.

European technology reached a milestone when the CEA’s Très Grand Centre de Calcul launched the Lucy quantum computer on 2026. At this event, Bruno Bonnell, Secretary General for Investment, and Anne Le Hénanff, Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs, saw a major milestone for the European quantum ecosystem. World’s most powerful photonic quantum computer Lucy boosts digital sovereignty and industrial competitiveness in the continent.

A Sovereign Hybrid Architecture

Lucy is the result of strategic Franco-European cooperation and was acquired by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking through GENCI as a member of the EuroQCS-France consortium. With sophisticated cryogenic systems supplied by their German partner, Attocube, the device is based on cutting-edge photonic technology created by the French business Quandela. This collaboration demonstrates a strong Franco-German industrial endeavor to safeguard the European quantum industry.

The GENCI Joliot-Curie 1 supercomputer is now uniquely connected to the system, resulting in a hybrid “HPC-Quantum” design. The quantum processor serves as an accelerator in this configuration, enabling the combined system to address scientific problems that are well above the capabilities of classical computers alone. A key component of Europe’s larger plan to fully investigate the possibilities of quantum computing is this hybrid method. Additionally, the project was co-funded under the national quantum plan of France 2030, guaranteeing that nearly all of the machine’s technology components are European.

The Photonic Advantage

Lucy’s dependence on photonic technology which use light as a quantum information carrier is among its most striking features. This strategy is becoming more widely accepted as a viable route to the deployment of quantum systems on an industrial scale. Photonics enables simpler qubit manipulation and more seamless integration into current data center infrastructures, in contrast to alternative quantum designs that necessitate processors operating at temperatures close to absolute zero.

Lucy is the outcome of an integrated research-to-operations approach that transforms long-standing scientific discoveries into independent industrial capabilities, according to Anne-Isabelle Léienvre, Chairwoman of the CEA. The project shows that Europe can manufacture and integrate these cutting-edge computing technologies, confirming its ability to lead the future era.

Unlocking Innovation for Industry and Research

For academic and business stakeholders throughout Europe, Lucy’s inauguration creates new opportunities. Now that the technology is openly available, researchers can propose projects in vital areas including machine learning, materials simulation, logistics optimization, and the identification of therapeutic compounds. By democratizing access to high-performance numerical simulations, this accessibility is intended to boost scientific competitiveness in France and throughout Europe.

Lucy is a “pioneering sovereign resource” that puts the industrial scaling of the quantum age closer than ever, according to GENCI CEO Michaël Krajecki. In a similar vein, Lucy is the fourth EuroHPC quantum computer to be unveiled, offering crucial new capabilities to Europe’s supercomputing environment, according to Anders Dam Jensen, Executive Director of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.

Looking Toward the Future: Alice Recoque and the Cloud

The vision for European computing is already looking ahead, even though Lucy represents the state of the art at the moment. Alice Recoque, a European exascale supercomputer, is predicted to replace Lucy in 2027. In order to assist the academic and business communities, this future system will further integrate quantum technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing (HPC).

Efforts are being made to increase these technologies’ cloud-based accessibility concurrently with these hardware advancements. A strategic initiative to include MerLin, a specialized quantum machine learning environment, into OVHcloud’s platform by mid-2026 was recently revealed by Quandela and OVHcloud. This partnership will allow data scientists to prototype hybrid AI-Quantum models using NVIDIA GPUs before testing them on actual photonic quantum processors like Belenos (12 qubits) and Canopus (24 qubits). This effort aims to democratize the use of quantum power for commercial applications by lowering the entry hurdle for data scientists who might not have specialist quantum expertise.

Quandela’s Rising Leadership

The Lucy project’s success brings Quandela recognition. DIGITALEUROPE’s Future Unicorn Award went to the firm in February 2026. European Investment Bank and European Innovation Council Fund leaders awarded Quandela for its scientific genius and deployment of five quantum computers in Europe and North America.

Niccolo Somaschi, Quandela’s CEO, said Lucy’s installation at the TGCC shows their commitment to high-performance quantum capabilities. Quandela was recognized for her work on fault-tolerant, energy-efficient quantum systems that can solve the most difficult social issues.

Conclusion

Lucy’s launch at the TGCC is a declaration of European digital resilience rather than merely a technical feat. Europe has created a competitive and open quantum ecosystem by pooling the knowledge of the CEA, GENCI, EuroHPC, and private partners like Quandela and Attocube. Lucy establishes a dominant position for the continent in the worldwide competition for quantum supremacy and technical leadership as it starts to handle difficult workloads for researchers and industry.
