QuamCore sets 1M-Qubit quantum computer in a single cryostat

To create a million-qubit quantum computer in a single cryostat, Israeli deep-tech startup QuamCore has secured $26 million.

Series A round funding

The Israeli deep-tech startup QuamCore has raised a total of $35 million (£27.8 million) after closing a $26 million (£20.6 million) Series A fundraising round. The money is intended to help QuamCore achieve its lofty objective of building what it says would be the first one-million-qubit quantum computer ever built inside a cryostat.

The primary objective of this significant investment is to support QuamCore’s ambitious goal of building what it claims will be the world’s first 1-million-qubit quantum computer contained within a single cryostat.

Sentinel Global spearheaded the Series A round, with Arkin Capital and returning investors Viola Ventures, Earth & Beyond Ventures, Surround Ventures, Rhodium, and Quantum Leap (or Qbeat Ventures) playing a major role. A $4 million non-dilutive grant from the Israel Innovation Authority further demonstrated the national interest in the startup’s potential.

Overcoming the Scalability Issue in Quantum Computing

The fields of medication development, energy, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovative materials could all undergo radical change as a result of quantum computing. However, the restricted scalability of the majority of existing quantum systems has been a significant barrier to wider deployment. Larger systems require expensive and intricate multi-cryostat infrastructures because of the average 5,000-qubit limit on existing platforms from key firms like Google and IBM.

Superconducting qubits, the most developed and economically attractive platform in quantum computing at the moment, are the result of QuamCore’s ground-breaking innovation. The company’s strategy is to include digital control logic that is superconducting straight into the cryostat. This innovative design removes the main thermal bottleneck that has impeded the widespread use of quantum technology and drastically reduces the requirement for extensive cabling by a factor of more than 1,000. Additionally, because of this integration, the control components can be found on the same circuit board as the qubits.

The Road to Quantum Computing That Is Fault-Tolerant

The incorporated quantum error correction in QuamCore’s system is a crucial component. This is thought to be crucial for creating commercially feasible, fault-tolerant quantum computers since it helps prevent data loss and instability brought on by environmental interference and noise.

From day one, it focused on the minimum viable system to unlock real-world quantum advantage – and that number is 1 million qubits, said QuamCore CEO Alon Cohen. “It decided to drastically rethink the architecture of the most advanced and effective platform: superconducting qubits,” he continued. The end product is a plan that can grow, remain small, and stay in line with the direction the industry is presently taking.

Effects on Quantum Economics

Investors anticipate a revolutionary effect. Using superconducting technology, the most cutting-edge and economically promising platform in quantum today, QuamCore’s team has developed a workable, scalable roadmap to a million-qubit machine, according to Dror Sharon, Partner at Sentinel Global. The CEO of Arkin Capital, Nir Arkin, emphasized that QuamCore “removes the thermal bottleneck that throttles today’s systems and charts a credible path to a single-cryostat, million-qubit machine” by integrating control logic within the cryostat. It anticipate that this density will unlock markets worth trillions of dollars and rewrite quantum economics.

Design to Fabrication QuamCore intends to move from the design and simulation stage to the manufacturing of its first-generation quantum processors using the recently obtained cash. The business also plans to grow its workforce and operations, as well as set up a specialized quantum lab. This funding enables us to accelerate prototype integration and chip production, Cohen continued. Superconducting qubits will continue to lead the maturing quantum industry strategy.
