Q.ANT’s Series A Round Funding for Q.ANT Photonic AI Chip

To develop quantum sensors and photonic processing for artificial intelligence, Q.ANT has secured €62 million in series A round funding.

Series A round funding

A €62 million (about USD 73 million) Series A investment round has been successfully completed by Q.ANT, a German deep-tech startup that is a pioneer in photonic processing. This substantial investment intends to further the research of quantum sensors and expedite the commercialization of its photonic processors for AI and high-performance computing (HPC).

UVC Partners, imec.xpand, and Cherry Ventures co-led the funding round. L-Bank, Staatsbank für Baden-Württemberg, Verve Ventures, GRAZIA EQUITY (also known as Grazia Equity), Venionaire Capital AG (including Venionaire Capital’s EXF Alpha), LEA Partners, Onsight Ventures, and TRUMPF (also known as Trumpf) are among the other deep tech investors taking part. This investment is regarded as one of the biggest deep tech capital rounds in Europe, setting the stage for a radical change in the way artificial intelligence is calculated.

Important Goals of the Investment: With the money infusion, Q.ANT will be able to:

  • Expand the manufacturing of its technology.
  • Improve the development of its current and upcoming photonic processors.
  • Expand its workforce in a variety of fields.
  • To accommodate growing customer deployments, increase its worldwide footprint, especially in the US.

Focus on Technology:

AI and HPC Photonic Processors:

Dr. Michael Förtsch launched Q.ANT in 2018 as a spin-off from Trumpf and serves as its CEO. When the company was founded, its goal was to redefine computers by utilizing light rather than electricity.

Q.ANT claims to have created the first commercial photonic processor for real-world AI and HPC applications in the last five years. ◦

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) is the foundation of these processors.

As a plug-in co-processor, the Q.ANT Native Processing Server is made to fit in with existing data centres with ease.

Tests conducted in the real world show that there are substantial advantages, such as up to 30 times energy efficiency, 50 times performance improvement, and the possibility for a 100-fold increase in data centre capacity, all without the need for intricate active cooling systems.

According to projections, data center energy use may eventually overtake Japan’s total yearly electricity consumption by 2026. This technology attempts to meet the increasing energy demands of AI infrastructure. Investors think Q.ANT’s chips can lead the way in developing a new, more sustainable AI infrastructure while delivering ground-breaking performance and drastically lowering data center running costs.

By 2030, Q.ANT wants to establish its photonic processing technology as a cornerstone of worldwide artificial intelligence systems.

Quantum sensors:

Additionally, Q.ANT’s quantum sensor portfolio development and commercialization are especially supported by the financing.

This includes the development of high-precision quantum magnetometers and quantum atomic gyroscopes, which are meant for uses like satellite attitude control. Quantum phenomena are used by these sensors to improve their measurement capabilities.

Strategic Guidance: Hermann Hauser, the founder of ARM, and Hermann Eul, a former member of the Infineon Management Board and former CVP & GM of Intel, have joined Q.ANT’s advisory board to support the company’s next phase of growth and commercialization. The company will benefit greatly from their combined experience in semiconductor scaling, industrialization, and international commercialization.

As an early investor, Trumpf gave Q.ANT the strong infrastructure and technical assistance it needed to create its ground-breaking photonic chip architecture.

Summary

The deep-tech German business Q.ANT has successfully raised €62 million in Series A funding, which is almost $73 million. Co-led by Cherry Ventures, UVC Partners, and imec.xpand, this sizeable investment is intended to advance the advancement and commercialization of Q.ANT’s quantum sensor technology. These include high-precision quantum magnetometers and quantum atomic gyroscopes for uses such as satellite attitude control. Scaling production, developing technology, growing the workforce, and extending the company’s global presence, especially into the US market, will all be made possible by the funds.
