PINQ2 & Distriq join To Advance Quantum Computing in Canada

Quebec’s Strategic Advancement in Quantum Technology: The Quantum Leap. Two of Quebec’s top quantum organizations, PINQ2 and Distriq, have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the adoption and commercialization of quantum technologies throughout Quebec and Canada. This is a major step to strengthen Canada’s position in the global quantum technology landscape.

Distriq and PINQ2 Partnership

Distriq and PINQ2 a Mutually Beneficial Partnership:

Distriq, Sherbrooke’s Quantum Innovation Zone, and PINQ2, which runs Canada’s first IBM Quantum System One, are leveraging their respective advantages to close the gap between infrastructure, industrial deployment, and research. By offering advanced toolkits like Qiskit SDK v2.0, shared access to classical and quantum computing platforms, and specific direction for incorporating quantum technologies into current AI and high-performance computing workflows, this partnership seeks to assist businesses of all sizes.

According to Marion Urso, a partnership spokeswoman, by onboarding more businesses, starting trial initiatives, and building infrastructure, this strategy should yield quantifiable outcomes in the next 12 to 18 months. She added that PINQ2 is already working with companies outside of Quebec, such as IBM.

Enhancing Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing with Nord Quantique:

Alongside this collaboration, Nord Quantique, a startup based in Sherbrooke, is making important advancements in the field of quantum computing. After coming out of stealth mode in 2022, the business raised CAD $9.5 million in seed money, which was led by the Paris-based Quantization VC fund and the Deep Tech Venture Fund of BDC Capital, with Real Ventures also contributing.

Hardware that speeds up the transition to completely fault-tolerant quantum computing is being developed by Nord Quantique. In order to mitigate and reduce error events on each individual qubit, the company is redesigning computers from the ground up, utilising Canadian expertise in quantum technology and semiconductor chip manufacture.

A Centre for Quantum Innovation in Sherbrooke

Because of programs like the Distriq Quantum Innovation Zone, which encourages research and entrepreneurship, Sherbrooke has emerged as a global centre for quantum technology. The city is home to the renowned academics and students of the Quantum Institute, which was founded forty-five years ago. International participants, such as French businesses Quandela and Pasqal, have been drawn to this ecosystem, which has helped the community flourish.

Additionally, the federal government has contributed more than $8 million to the Sherbrooke quantum industry, including a $1.8 million loan for Nord Quantique and a $5.2-million grant for Distriq.

About Distriq

Distriq, commonly known as the Quantum Innovation Zone, is a vital quantum science and technology facility in Sherbrooke, Quebec. In 2022, Distriq was formed as an innovation accelerator to accelerate quantum technology development and commercialisation by providing infrastructure and supporting partnerships between researchers, businesspeople, and industry leaders.

Ecosystem and Mission

The goal of Distriq is to establish a collaborative atmosphere that connects scholarly research with practical industrial use. Distriq seeks to turn quantum ideas into long-lasting commercial applications by combining knowledge from a variety of fields, including as research, education, entrepreneurship, and industry. The organisation pairs entrepreneurs with promising quantum technology and facilitates a collaborative chain of quantum ventures from inception to industrial deployment.

Resources and Facilities

DevTeQ, a shared laboratory with cutting-edge technology necessary for quantum research and development, is a pillar of Distriq’s infrastructure. Clean rooms, cryogenic refrigerators, quantum computers, and other specialised equipment required for experimentation and prototyping are among the facilities. Furthermore, Espace Quantique 1 offers more than 50,000 square feet of adaptable office space, conference rooms, coworking spaces, and technical expert services, all of which promote a creative and cooperative atmosphere.

Strategic Alliances

Distriq works closely with prestigious organisations including the Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation (3iT), Institut Quantique, and the Université de Sherbrooke. By assisting businesses in industries like artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and creative manufacturing, these collaborations strengthen the integrated innovation chain.

To promote the uptake and commercialization of quantum technologies in Quebec and Canada, Distriq teamed up with PINQ2 in 2025. Through this partnership, businesses will have access to cutting-edge toolkits such as Qiskit SDK v2.0, platforms for quantum computing, and specific instructions for incorporating quantum technologies into current processes.

Assistance from the Government

The Canadian government has invested more than $8 million on Sherbrooke’s quantum ecosystem in recognition of Distriq’s importance in the field. This includes a non-repayable gift of $5.2 million to Distriq for the purchase of cutting-edge DevTeQ equipment, increasing its ability to facilitate quantum research and development.

In conclusion

Quebec’s dedication to being a leader in quantum technology is demonstrated by the partnership between PINQ² and Distriq as well as the developments made by Nord Quantique. These programs seek to establish Canada as a major force in the global quantum scene in addition to hastening the deployment of quantum technologies.
