PacketLight Networks, a renowned supplier of DWDM and OTN equipment, has successfully demonstrated Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over a 400G DWDM network in a significant development that is poised to completely alter the digital security environment. The combined demonstration demonstrated how NEC’s cutting-edge QKD technology and PacketLight’s PL-4000M 600G Muxponder integrated seamlessly and very effectively. The creation of a strong, high-performing, quantum-safe network environment was the outcome of this collaboration. An essential part of PacketLight, the PL-4000M, is made to effectively manage large amounts of data traffic, in this case, enabling the 400G data flow across the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system.

The novel aspect of this configuration was the QKD transmission technique itself: a distinct, specialised fibre optic link was used to transmit the QKD channel. Importantly, the 400G data traffic was carried by the main data link fibre, which ran concurrently with this unique QKD fibre.

Significant benefits are provided by this well-thought-out dual-fibre arrangement, chief among them being the protection of the sensitive quantum communications. The integrity of quantum signals is crucial for the safe exchange of cryptographic keys since they are inherently very sensitive to noise and interference. The configuration guarantees the stability and integrity of these quantum signals by isolating the QKD channel onto a separate, dedicated fibre. This strategy also ensures that the 400G data traffic continues to operate at peak efficiency across the current DWDM infrastructure. This implies that businesses can improve the security of their communications without sacrificing the effectiveness or speed of their high-bandwidth data transfer.

Furthermore, adding sophisticated quantum security features to already-existing operational network environments is incredibly affordable and extremely scalable with our dual-fiber setup. The core goal of QKD, safe key exchange, is made possible in real-world applications by this useful paradigm. The ability to strengthen communication security without requiring expensive or intricate redesigns of existing network infrastructures is a key advantage this example highlights. The outcomes clearly demonstrated the integrated solution’s effectiveness and resilience. In particular, the encrypted data link continuously had low latency and a 100% throughput. Strong empirical proof of the solution’s dependability and practicality was provided by the independent verification of these crucial performance criteria using a 100GbE tester. This successful validation confirms that quantum technologies may be deployed alongside current infrastructures without sacrificing performance or necessitating significant changes to operational networks, especially when combined with PacketLight’s DWDM/OTN devices.

The distinguished CEO of PacketLight, Koby Reshef, expressed great delight in his organization’s participation in this important collaboration. “Enhanced secure data transmission is made possible by the combination of PacketLight’s DWDM/OTN devices and NEC’s QKD technology,” he said. “We take pride in our involvement in this cooperation and eagerly anticipate the market’s response to the new opportunities it presents,” Mr. Reshef added, expressing PacketLight’s excitement. Yoichiro Ito, the Director of Innovation Product Solutions Group, Defence Network Department of NEC, echoed this good feeling by expressing his happiness over the joint demonstration’s successful conclusion. Mr. Ito notably complimented the effective collaboration while highlighting NEC’s longstanding competence in QKD, with a research facility in Japan guiding its advancement for over two decades.

“With this demonstration, we confirmed our QKD system’s compatibility with PacketLight’s equipment, which validated its applicability in more varied usage scenarios,” he said. The efficiency and adaptability of PacketLight’s technology in facilitating state-of-the-art quantum security applications are further confirmed by this NEC statement. Mr. Ito wrapped off by restating NEC’s dedication to working with partners like PacketLight going forward in order to add even more value in the rapidly developing field of quantum security.
