Nu Quantum Company’s $60M series A to quantum networking

Nu Quantum Company’s $60M series A to quantum networking

Nu Quantum Company

The global struggle for quantum supremacy has undergone a dramatic shift with the Spanish government’s strategic €9.75 million investment in Cambridge-born pioneer Nu Quantum. This money infusion is the cornerstone of a substantial $60 million (£47 million/€51 million) investment. A Series A fundraising round was the largest ever raised by a company dedicated to quantum networking.

In order to become a significant center for photonic infrastructure and quantum networking in Europe, one of the primary prerequisites of this historic deal is that Nu Quantum establish a Spanish subsidiary. During the fourth S4i (Science for Industry) meeting in Madrid, Dr. Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, the CEO and founder of Nu Quantum, who is Spanish, and Spain’s Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, Oscar López Águeda, personally made the announcement.

The Leap Toward Distributed Computing

The industry has focused on creating more powerful individual quantum computers, Nu Quantum is leading the way toward distributed quantum computing. There are currently insufficient qubits in individual quantum computers to tackle difficult, practical problems. The secret to their approach is Nu Quantum’s proprietary technology, the Entanglement Fabric. It combines the computational power of many quantum processors by connecting them in real-time.

The new Spanish subsidiary will prioritize the commercialization of the Quantum Networking Unit (QNU). While these units act as the “switches” of the quantum world, the development of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) will provide the “cables” ultra-fast, low-loss modules that provide data flow between nodes.

Experts say that a networked approach is the most feasible way to commercialize quantum computing for medicine discovery, climate modeling, energy optimization, and communications security.

Economic Impact and “Technological Sovereignty”

The Spanish government claims that this expenditure, made possible by the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), is a crucial component of the PERTE Chip program. With funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery funds, the PERTE Chip aims to improve local semiconductor and microelectronics capabilities.

By setting up Nu Quantum’s infrastructure in Spain, the government wants to achieve several strategic goals:

  • Job Creation: The project will immediately create over thirty highly skilled positions by drawing top talent from around the globe.
  • Ecosystem Integration: Barcelona’s Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) is one of the leading Spanish research institutes with whom Nu Quantum will collaborate.
  • European Sovereignty: By strengthening Europe’s “technological sovereignty,” the project makes sure that the continent stays competitive and isn’t only reliant on American or Asian hardware for essential infrastructure in the future.

A “Homecoming” for Leadership

The agreement holds significant personal and professional value for Dr. Carmen Palacios-Berraquero. Since she founded the company in 2018 as a spin-out from Cambridge, her leadership has already received support from a variety of foreign investors, including National Grid Partners, Gresham House Ventures, and Amadeus Capital Partners.

Dr. Palacios-Berraquero stated, “It is particularly meaningful to contribute to a national commitment to quantum infrastructure built on PICs and the QNU because it was born and raised in Spain.” She claims that the investment supports the development of their solution and recognizes Spain’s exceptional potential in the photonics sector.

Minister Áscar López Águeda echoed this optimism, stating that Spain is actively preparing for a day when quantum technology will be debated on a daily basis. Nu Quantum will play a key role, enabling Spain’s quantum ecosystem to rely on secure networks that pave the way for the leap toward commercial applications.

In-Depth Explanation: Understanding Nu Quantum

The Nu Quantum is considered a “key player” in the worldwide quantum industry, it is necessary to look at the specific technical and strategic challenges they are addressing.

The Problem: The Scalability Bottleneck

The “main challenge” to the industrial application of quantum computing is scalability. Building a single, massive quantum processor is technically difficult due to the instability of quantum states. Nu Quantum advocates a distributed approach to counter this. Instead of a single massive computer, they propose a network of smaller computers working together.

    The Core Technology: Entanglement Fabric

The company’s distinguishing technology is called the Entanglement Fabric. The goal of this design is to connect quantum processors to form large, distributed networks.

      • Quantum Networking Unit (QNU): The Quantum Networking Unit (QNU) is the primary hub or “switch” that manages the quantum data.
      • Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs):These are essential for creating incredibly fast and low-loss switching and sensing modules. As quantum information travels between processors, these quantum circuits maintain its unique quantum properties.

      Strategic Public-Private Collaboration

Nu Quantum employs a public-private partnership concept. Its latest $60 million Series A investment, which closed in December 2025, involved a diverse group of foreign and governmental sponsors. Among these backers were:

        • • Strategic Investors: National Grid Partners, Sumitomo (Presidio Ventures), and East Innovate are strategic investors.
        • Venture Capital: IQ Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, Gresham House Ventures, and Morpheus Ventures are examples of venture capital.
        • Governmental & Institutional: SETT (Spain), NSSIF (UK), and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures.

        Impact on Real Industries

Nu Quantum provides the necessary processing power through networked systems in an effort to unleash economic value in several important domains:

        • Healthcare: Accelerating drug discovery through the use of complex molecular simulations.
        • Sustainability: Enhancing energy optimization and climate modeling.
        • Materials Science: Enabling complex material simulations.
        • Security: The basis for communications security is provided by secure quantum networks.
