IYQ Meaning, History, origin, and Future of Quantum Science

IYQ meaning

The United Nations (UN) declared the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) to be a year-long, global celebration that will take place from January 1 to December 31, 2025. This international effort seeks to raise public understanding of the significance of quantum physics and its applications while showcasing the revolutionary potential of quantum research and technology.

Origins and Declaration

The year 2025 marks the centenary of quantum mechanics‘ original development. The idea began as a grassroots effort honoring the centenary of important fundamental work in 1925, which is frequently referred to as quantum theory’s “annus mirabilis.” In particular, this centenary commemorates the release of Werner Heisenberg’s groundbreaking work on matrix mechanics, Erwin Schrödinger’s creation of the wave equation, and Max Born and Pascual Jordan’s formalization of the mathematical framework.

The following steps were taken to reach the official proclamation:

  • A preliminary proposal presented at the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) General Assembly in October 2021.
  • The endeavor received backing from dozens of national scientific groups.
  • The proposal was approved by the UNESCO Executive Board in May 2023, acknowledging the importance of quantum research in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
  • On June 7, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution by acclamation, formally designating 2025 as the IYQ. More than 70 nations, representing more than five billion people, co-sponsored the resolution.

Objectives, Structure, and Main Ideas

The American Physical Society and UNESCO, the designated lead agency, organised the IYQ, which is run by the IYQ Secretariat.

The following are the main ideas and themes that guide the year:

  1. Raising Public Awareness and Education: The year’s goals are to engage large audiences in discussions about quantum physics and to attain “quantum literacy” globally.
  2. Equity and Inclusion: One of the main goals is to overcome the “quantum divide” in research opportunities and infrastructure between the global north and global south by encouraging inclusive education and cooperation.
  3. Inspiring Future Generations: With an emphasis on gender and regional equity in STEM, the project aims to inspire future generations.
  4. Long-term Impact: Governments and organizations want to improve international research and development partnerships, create pipelines for inclusive quantum education, and incorporate quantum innovation into plans for sustainable development.

“No One Owns Quantum Science” and “Everyone is Invited” are the guiding concepts of IYQ.

Important Projects and Activities

The year-long celebration encompasses a wide variety of well-known occasions, events, and educational programs around the world:

  • Official Launch: On February 4–5, 2025, UNESCO Headquarters in Paris had an opening ceremony to formally launch the IYQ.
  • International Events: Through the IYQ website, celebrants were asked to arrange and disseminate grassroots events. International colloquia, workshops, and regional displays were among the more than 500 events that were recorded.
  • The Quantum 100: This significant international program was created to honor 100 leaders who are advancing the area, including physicists, engineers, artists, and legislators. Additionally, the project paid tribute to pioneers such as Professor Raymond Laflamme.
  • Education and Outreach: For students, teachers, and specialists, the IYQ offers a Quantum Resource Library that includes texts, films, photos, and interactive resources. Targeted training programs, such as open-access quantum computing courses and fellowships for African women scientists, are among the initiatives within the IYQ umbrella that are particularly created to address imbalances.
  • Closing Ceremony: Using the IYQ website, IYQ celebrants were asked to host and share grassroots events throughout the year. Many of the more than 500 events that were registered were listed as “Global Events,” such as the official IYQ closing ceremony that took place in Ghana in February 2026.

In addition to being a time for reflection, 2025 is seen as a strategic declaration that quantum science will significantly influence the future, especially as it advances towards “quantum utility,” in which quantum computers are used to tackle practical issues in fields like medication development and climate modelling.
