To expedite foundational research and commercialization, IonQ and the University of Chicago have established a landmark quantum center.
IonQ and UChicago
The University of Chicago (UChicago) and IonQ, the world’s leading quantum firm, have signed a strategic agreement to establish the IonQ Centre for Engineering and Science on the university’s campus. By integrating state-of-the-art commercial technology into an academic setting, this historic collaboration aims to accelerate commercialization efforts and advance quantum research.
A significant research project aimed at helping UChicago academics develop new quantum technologies more quickly is part of the agreement. Strengthening IonQ’s leadership in its technology portfolio, which includes quantum computing, quantum networking, quantum sensing, and quantum security, is the ultimate goal of this partnership.

Historic Deployment of Production-Grade Quantum Infrastructure
As the first deployment of an entanglement distribution quantum network and a production-grade quantum computer on a university campus, the collaboration represents a major milestone.
The deal calls for IonQ to set up an IonQ entanglement distribution quantum network and a specialized next-generation quantum computer at the University of Chicago. Researchers from a wide range of fields will have access to IonQ’s cutting-edge quantum hardware and software tools the implementation of this new infrastructure.
IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi highlighted the importance of this deployment, saying the deal will “fuel IonQ’s innovation engine”. De Masi emphasized the synergy that was produced by bringing together some of the top academic expertise in the world with IonQ’s commercial-grade quantum computers.
Driving Intellectual Property and Long-Term Commercial Growth
Because of the strategic partnership, IonQ will have the opportunity to collaborate directly with one of the best research institutes in the country, which is renowned for its scientific leadership, including the work of Enrico Fermi, who created significant contributions for the Manhattan Project there.
Continued financing for research with the top quantum academics at UChicago is a crucial part of the deal. The main objective is to produce intellectual property (IP), which IonQ plans to use to propel new capabilities, products, and sustained business expansion.
The collaboration is set up to help convert innovative discoveries into technology directly, which might speed up IonQ’s product and technology portfolio. It is anticipated that the research produced would result in discoveries with useful practical applications that will immediately enhance IonQ’s product roadmap and fortify its competitive edge in the government and enterprise markets. IonQ’s roadmap of critical quantum technologies is closely aligned with these research areas, which include:
- Quantum hardware for networking, computation, security, and sensing.
- Applications of quantum mechanics in sophisticated communication protocols, chemistry, materials science, optimization, and security.

Centerpiece of the Chicago Quantum Ecosystem
A new structure on the UChicago campus will serve as the physical location of the IonQ Centre for Engineering and Science. This new facility, which will house the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago as well as other university scientific and technology research areas, is expected to be built in part by IonQ.
UChicago President Paul Alivisatos, the university’s leadership in quantum science is based on innovative research and strong partnerships. He sees the collaboration with IonQ as evidence of his belief that industry and fundamental research can work together to progress the area. Alivisatos said this assistance will allow faculty and students to explore innovative ideas, accelerate scientific discoveries and innovation, and influence the Chicago quantum technology ecosystem.
Additionally, IonQ is in the process of being designated as a core partner of the University of Chicago-based multi-institutional research consortium known as the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE). As a key partner, IonQ will help guide the consortium, which now consists of prominent organizations like Purdue, the University of Illinois, Northwestern, and the national laboratories of Argonne and Fermilab. In the end, this project will serve as a fundamental forum for cooperation between the government, business, and academia.
IonQ’s Continued Leadership in Quantum Computing
IonQ, Inc. offers solutions to the world’s biggest problems. Customers and partners like Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA have benefited from the company’s state-of-the-art quantum systems, such as IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, which have produced 20x performance results.
In 2025, IonQ achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate integrity, setting a new world record for quantum computing performance. In order to meet its declared goal of delivering quantum computers with two million qubits by 2030, the corporation is aggressively speeding up its technical roadmap. These technological developments are intended to spur innovation in a variety of domains, such as defense, logistics, financial modelling, materials research, drug discovery, and cybersecurity. IonQ is positioned as a frontrunner in the development of the quantum internet due to its advancements in quantum networking.
This partnership with UChicago strengthens IonQ’s long-standing dedication to promoting quantum research via scholarly partnerships. Prior collaborations have included work with Duke University (concentrating on advanced multi-qubit gate design and quantum algorithms), the University of Washington (simulating the matter-antimatter imbalance in space), and the University of Maryland (where IonQ maintains a dedicated Quantum Research Centre).
With offices in Maryland, Washington, California, Tennessee, South Korea, and Switzerland, IonQ continues to operate internationally. The company has received attention for its inventive technologies and quick growth, and it has been listed on Forbes’ 2025 Most Successful Mid-Cap Companies list, Newsweek’s 2025 Excellence Index 1000, and Fortune Future 50.
