Heven AeroTech and IonQ Collaborate to Create Quantum-Enabled Drones for Use in National Security

Heven AeroTech and IonQ

The world’s top quantum firm, IonQ, today announced a major new investment and strategic alliance with Heven AeroTech, a developer of cutting-edge hydrogen-powered Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) technologies for aerospace and defense applications.

The main goal of the partnership is to integrate Heven AeroTech’s autonomous aerial systems with IonQ’s entire range of quantum technologies, including quantum computing, quantum networking, quantum sensing, and quantum security. Mission resilience, stealth, and operational performance will all be redefined by this partnership, especially in situations where GPS services are blocked.

Redefining Operational Performance with Quantum Integration

The collaboration is well-positioned to hasten the application of quantum technology in practical aerospace applications. In particular, IonQ’s investment will accelerate the development of quantum-enabled endpoints, supporting the company’s overarching goal of creating the Quantum Internet in space, on the ground, and in the air.

Heven AeroTech will be able to provide a “new class of unparalleled UAS capabilities” by incorporating IonQ’s cutting-edge quantum technology, according to Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, who emphasized the anticipated increase in capability. “The collaboration enables Heven’s drones to ‘address missions no other player can with unequalled precision, resilience, and security,” he continued.

Redefining mission resilience and operational performance in GPS-denied conditions is the collaboration’s main objective.

Key Quantum Initiatives for Drone Systems

The partnership describes several cooperative projects aimed at incorporating cutting-edge quantum characteristics into Heven’s platforms:

Quantum Sensing: The partners intend to equip Heven drones with quantum sensors for critical functions as alternative positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). For systems functioning in disputed contexts where conventional GPS navigation might not work, this functionality is essential.

Quantum Computing: IonQ’s quantum systems will be used to carry out intricate operations, such as fleet routing optimization. Additionally, real-time merging of drone and satellite imagery is anticipated to be made possible by quantum computing.

Quantum Networking and Security: Using quantum communications to establish incredibly safe and dependable connections between the drones is an essential component. Enabling mission resilience requires this quantum security capability.

Heven AeroTech’s Long-Endurance Platform

The use of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion in aerial vehicles was first introduced by Heven AeroTech, a Virginia-based business established in 2019. This technology allows its drones, like the Heven Z1, to fly up to 600 miles for over 10 hours, which is an impressive feat of long-endurance flight.

By fusing this long-endurance flight with sophisticated autonomy and stealth capabilities fueled by renewable energy, Heven’s systems distinguish themselves from conventional electric or fossil fuel drones, establishing the company as a pioneer in aerial robotics.

The founder and CEO of Heven AeroTech, Ben Levinson, affirmed that IonQ’s quantum technologies are a “natural fit” for their aerial platforms that run on hydrogen. He underlined that the collaboration enables them to “push the boundaries of endurance, autonomy, and security in ways previously thought impossible,” collaborating to develop a new generation of uncrewed systems that can thrive in hostile environments and provide essential capabilities for crucial missions.

IonQ’s Expanding Defense Leadership and Technological Milestones

IonQ’s increasing leadership in integrating quantum innovation into next-generation defense platforms is reflected in this partnership. Jordan Shapiro, President and General Manager of IonQ’s Quantum Networking, Sensing & Security division, will join the Board of Directors of Heven AeroTech as a demonstration of dedication and integrated strategy.

The collaboration builds on IonQ’s four contracts with the U.S. Air Force Research Lab, each worth over $100 million and given in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025. It also strengthens IonQ’s current position in U.S. defense and networking initiatives. These contracts are intended to power secure and scalable quantum networks and computers in the United States and other countries. The announcement furthers IonQ’s goal of creating the first quantum-secure global communications network in history, which was furthered by the company’s previous purchases of Vector Atomic and Capella Space.

In order to deliver the most potent quantum computers with two million qubits by 2030, IonQ is continuing to speed its technical roadmap. Accelerating innovation in fields including drug research, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense is the goal of this mission. IonQ has already shown state-of-the-art performance, setting a world record for quantum computing performance in 2025 with a two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.99%. Additionally, the business is positioned as a leader in the development of the quantum internet due to its breakthroughs in quantum networking.
