Google and UK Collaborate On Quantum Tech Applications

Google and UK Collaborate On Quantum Tech Applications

Google seeks applications for its potent quantum technology from UK specialists.

Google and UK

Google and the UK are collaborating on a major project that will give researchers access to Google’s cutting-edge Willow quantum processor. This program, which is a type of open competition, allows academics in the UK to suggest and carry out experiments with the goal of discovering useful, real-world uses for the experimental technology, particularly in disciplines like chemistry and medicine.

According to experts, this is great news for researchers in the UK. Google will also gain from the academic experience, speeding up research through the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). According to the report, the UK government is making significant investments in the quantum sector due to the expected economic impact of this cutting-edge technology, which has formidable rivals like Amazon and IBM.

Google and the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) in the United Kingdom have established a partnership to give UK academics access to Google’s cutting-edge “Willow” quantum processor. Accelerating the discovery of useful applications in disciplines including physics, chemistry, materials science, and life sciences is the goal of this collaboration. Researchers want to solve chemistry and medical problems that are beyond the capabilities of present computers.

Access to the State-of-the-Art “Willow” Chip

The collaboration’s fundamental component gives UK scientists access to Google’s potent Willow quantum processor. When it was introduced in 2024, the Willow chip was hailed as a major advancement in quantum error correction. The University of Surrey’s Professor Paul Stevenson called the partnership “great news for UK researchers” and said that the new opportunity to use Google’s Willow processor through an open competition puts UK researchers in an attractive position. The collaboration is advantageous for Google since it will benefit from the expertise of UK experts.

Using particle physics-based technologies, quantum devices address issues in a fundamentally different way than traditional computers found in laptops and smartphones. The majority of current quantum machines are experimental with limited real-world uses, and although quantum computing is seen as an intriguing new frontier, the technology has not yet reached its full potential. It is intended that giving UK researchers access to Willow will enable them to “uncover new real-world applications.”

Open Competition and Collaborative Experiments

In order to demonstrate their intended use of the chip, UK specialists and scholars are encouraged to submit research proposals. To design and carry out experiments, selected candidates will collaborate closely with specialists from Google and the UK Quantum Lab (NQCC). According to NQCC Director Dr. Michael Cuthbert, the collaboration will “accelerate discovery.” Quantum computing may eventually be applied in fields like fundamental physics and materials, the innovative science that the program supports.

ORCA, Quantum Motion, and Oxford Ionics are among the British companies that have already created seven quantum computers for the NQCC. In the quantum space, rival companies like IBM and Amazon are also creating their own technology. According to some analysts, within ten years, powerful machines that can make a real-world impact will be built, as a result of corporations announcing new breakthroughs during 2025.

Broader UK Quantum Strategy

This project is in line with the UK government’s broader plan to make significant financial investments in quantum technologies. The UK’s Industrial Strategy places a high focus on quantum computing, and the government is investing £670 million to develop the technology. According to officials, the quantum industry may boost the UK economy by £11 billion by 2045.

This cooperation is the most recent in a string of collaborations. Additionally, Google, with the University of Bristol and University College London (UCL) has a long-standing “Prosperity Partnership” that focuses on creating quantum software for modelling and simulation. In addition, the UK government announced in July 2025 that it had partnered with Google Cloud to investigate the application of AI and quantum computing in the public sector.
