Emergence Quantum And IonQ Collaborate to Advance Quantum

Emergence Quantum

In order to enhance global quantum capabilities, IonQ and Emergence Quantum have formed a strategic alliance.

Emergence Quantum, an Australian quantum hardware R&D startup, and IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a leading commercial quantum computing and networking company, have formed a strategic alliance. This cooperation, announced on July 23, 2025, promotes Australia’s quantum capabilities and IonQ’s Asia-Pacific development. This project emphasizes IonQ’s commitment to quantum innovation through strategic international cooperation.

Co-Developing Next-Generation Quantum Hardware

The core of this partnership is a cooperative endeavour to build upon current ion trap technology developments. Next-generation materials and electronics will be jointly developed by Emergence Quantum and IonQ. The design and simulation of qubit control application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are included in this important work.

The teams will also be tackling the difficult problems of growing system capacity while lowering hardware complexity. They will also investigate novel materials and deposition methods to greatly improve the performance of ion traps. The work of Emergence Quantum, especially its use of integrated cryogenic electronics to overcome the scaling issues of quantum computers, is centered on this emphasis on integrated hardware platforms and underlying technology.

A Strategic Alignment of Expertise and Goals

The alliance aims to capitalize on Australia’s abundant quantum talent. SVP of IonQ’s Engineering and Technology division, Dr. Dean Kassmann, emphasized that the partnership is part of a larger plan to engage regional specialists and organizations worldwide in advancing high-performance, scalable quantum computing and networking. IonQ has substantial access to a “world-class team of Ph.D. quantum scientists” with decades of expertise in cryogenic electronics and quantum engineering for this project, he emphasized.

Professor David Reilly, Emergence Quantum’s CEO and co-founder, pointed out that Australia has a substantial need for quantum technologies. He was thrilled to be working with IonQ, saying that the partnership will enable them to quicken Australia’s quantum development and expansion. Prof. Reilly also discussed the partnership’s goal of overcoming Australia’s long-standing problem of drawing in foreign investment without sacrificing talented and knowledgeable locals.

Deep Expertise from Emergence Quantum

The experience that Emergence Quantum contributes is extensive. Former Microsoft quantum team members launched the business to capitalize on their combined knowledge of hardware integration, quantum control, and systems engineering.

The leadership team includes:

  • Prof. David Reilly (CEO and co-founder): Has held various positions at the University of Sydney, Harvard University, and the University of New South Wales, and spent eight years as a senior leader in Microsoft’s quantum group before his current role.
  • Thomas Ohki (CTO/CSO and co-founder): Before co-founding Emergence Quantum, he worked with Prof. Reilly at Microsoft and oversaw the quantum group at Raytheon/BBN Technologies.

Together, the Emergence Quantum team has decades of experience, solid connections in the public and private sectors, and a thorough awareness of the U.S. and Australian quantum technology environments. Their knowledge ranges from the sophisticated engineering of scaled-up computer and sensing systems to the basic physics of semiconductor and superconducting devices.

IonQ’s Momentum and Vision

IonQ’s momentum in Australia, which includes its continued partnership with the Australian National University, is amplified by the most recent association. IonQ is regarded as a top provider of networking, applications, and commercial quantum computing. Its primary objective is to provide high-performance solutions that address intricate global issues.

IonQ Forte and IonQ Forte Enterprise, the company’s current generation of quantum computers, have already shown off a number of noteworthy features, assisting clients and partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA in achieving 20x performance figures. Delivering quantum computers with two million qubits by 2030 is part of the company’s ambitious technology strategy, which aims to boost innovation in a variety of industries, including defense, logistics, financial modelling, materials research, drug discovery, and cybersecurity. IonQ is establishing itself as a pioneer in the creation of the quantum internet by making significant strides in quantum networking as well.

Built In’s 2025 100 Best Midsize Places to Work in Washington, DC, and Seattle, Forbes’ 2025 Most Successful Mid-Cap Companies list, Newsweek’s 2025 Excellence Index 1000, and IonQ’s quick expansion and cutting-edge technology have all earned the company accolades in the industry. Through its solutions on all major cloud providers, the business continues to increase the impact and accessibility of quantum computing.

With the potential to boost the global quantum ecosystem and expedite the development of next-generation quantum hardware, this strategic partnership between IonQ and Emergence Quantum is a major advancement for both businesses.
