CERN Quantum Technology Initiative in Europe Quantum future

CERN Quantum Technology Initiative

The late 2025 Quantum Business Community Summit at CERN gathered together European business leaders and quantum technology researchers. The meeting attempted to connect academic research and commercial applications to keep Europe competitive in cybersecurity, healthcare, and climate modelling. CERN Quantum Technology Initiative supports deep-tech firms and tool co-development with a vital innovation platform. The development of these cutting-edge technologies requires a robust public-private partnership, according to participants. In the end, the summit emphasized CERN’s dual function as a potential end user for cutting-edge quantum solutions and a technological testbed.

CERN as an Innovation Platform

As a QuIC affiliate member, CERN has long been acknowledged as a “learning ground” for cutting-edge technology. According to QuIC Executive Director Thierry Botter, “no better place than CERN to strike up delicate yet honest quantum conversations” exists. The organization provides a specialized platform for innovation through its Quantum Technology Initiative (QTI), which fosters co-development opportunities and advances both CERN’s basic research and the larger technical landscape.

The summit emphasized CERN’s dual function as an end-user and a testbed. The program aims to provide prospective applications for quantum computers while making CERN’s technical expertise available to private enterprises, according to Amanda Diez Fernández, who organizes partnerships for the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative.

Encouraging the Quantum Environment

Through the CERN Venture Connect initiative, CERN is actively fostering the expansion of deep-tech entrepreneurs in order to close the gap between laboratory research and commercially viable products. Through this program, businesses can access a worldwide network of investors and CERN’s cutting-edge technology. CERN plays a “crucial role in the creation and education of talent” and has the potential to become a major buyer of the very technology that these entrepreneurs create, according to Tomek Schulz, co-founder of the firm Kiutra.

Europe’s First Priority

A “top priority for the European Commission” is quantum technologies. According to European Innovation Council member Gustav Kalbe, it is poised to become a significant part of daily life, with uses ranging from:

  • Climate modelling
  • Cybersecurity
  • Product development
  • Communication and healthcare

Local achievements like Geneva’s first six-node quantum network and more general projects like the Quantum Internet Alliance and EuroQCI were among the recent developments covered during the summit. These advancements show how quickly secure communication has evolved towards the long-term goal of a working quantum internet.

Momentum of Collaboration

Experts concur that close cooperation within the domains of industry, politics, and research is essential to the field’s development as the International Year of Quantum draws to a close. According to Benjamin Frisch, CERN’s Business Development leader, this kind of collaboration is necessary to guarantee that quantum technologies advance responsibly and provide real benefits to society.

Analogy for Understanding: Consider CERN’s contribution to quantum technology as a high-performance testing facility for automakers. CERN offers the complex environment and knowledge required to “test drive” quantum theories and tools, making sure they are reliable enough for the “real-world roads” of business and daily life, much like a specialized track enables engineers to push new engine designs to their limits before they are ever used in everyday vehicles.
