AFWERX SBIR News: QuSecure Wins $3.9M to secure U.S. air force

A $3.9 million contract from the U.S. Air Force was given to QuSecure to strengthen quantum-resilient communications for strategic defense.

AFWERX SBIR news

Quantum computing is coming; thus, AFWERX has awarded QuSecure, Inc., a $3.9 million SBIR Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) contract to strengthen national security. Awarded on January 15, 2026, this contract expands QuSecure’s collaboration with the USAF to provide advanced post-quantum cryptography (PQC). The program targets unique operations in the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), which manages the nation’s most important strategic deterrent capabilities, including the B-52 bomber fleet.

Defending Strategic Deterrence Against Quantum Threats

This multimillion dollar award’s major goal is to keep the Department of the Air Force (DAF) safe from the new threat of quantum-enabled decryption. The possibility for future quantum computers to crack the traditional encryption now in use to secure sensitive data is a serious vulnerability brought about by the rapid advancement of quantum computing technology. Countering “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” techniques, in which attackers gather encrypted data now to decrypt it once sufficiently potent quantum technology becomes available, is a proactive security method that has resulted from this.

The importance of this objective was underlined by Patrick Shore, Director of Strategy, Government at QuSecure, who said that the award advances collaborate with the AFGSC to deliver cryptographic resilience in support of the strategic deterrent mission. Maintaining dependable, private, and continuous communication is critical to mission accomplishment for durable platforms such as the B-52 bomber. The money will help create encryption that is resistant to these next algorithmic assaults and can be easily incorporated into the military’s current infrastructure.

The QuProtect R3 Platform: An Adaptable Protection

QuSecure’s flagship QuProtect R3 platform is essential to their approach. The platform’s modular, crypto-agile design enables centralized governance and visibility over an organization’s whole inventory of cryptographic assets. This “crypto-agility” is crucial to contemporary defense since it allows for the quick replacement or updating of cryptographic algorithms in response to emerging threats without necessitating a significant re-architecture of the system or interfering with operations.

The USAF may quickly implement NIST post-quantum standards by using this architecture. This guarantees that every time a new cryptographic standard is issued or a new vulnerability is found, the military won’t have to undertake costly and time-consuming system overhauls. Air-gapped networks and classified cloud environments, which are common for high-security military activities, are among the several network contexts in which the platform is built to integrate seamlessly.

The Roadmap to Impact Level 6 (IL6) Authorization

Pursuing Impact Level 6 (IL6) authorization for the QuProtect R3 platform is a significant accomplishment of this TACFI contract. The third quarter of 2026 is when the firm hopes to obtain this accreditation. To implement quantum-resilient infrastructure across secret and classified cloud environments, the Department of Defense (DoD) and DAF agencies must get IL6 authority, which is a crucial obstacle.

Government organizations will be able to deploy these quantum-resistant systems for real-time, operational mission usage once they are permitted. By positioning QuSecure’s technology as a fundamental security layer inside the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) ecosystem, this action speeds up the transfer of innovation from small enterprises to active-duty service personnel. The partnership between AFRL and AFWERX is a component of a larger initiative to modernize technical advancement and lessen the bureaucratic hold-ups that frequently impede the uptake of cutting-edge security technologies.

Expanding Beyond National Security

QuSecure is pitching its PQC technology for much wider uses, even if the security of USAF vital assets is the contract’s immediate emphasis. A expanding body of government effort, including recent initiatives for the Missile Defense Agency (SHIELD), forms the foundation for this TACFI award.

To provide standardized quantum-safe telemetry and logistics, QuSecure is focusing on a number of high-growth commercial areas. Some of these are:

  • 5G infrastructure for smart cities: safeguarding the enormous data flows of networked metropolitan areas.
  • IoT for healthcare: safeguarding private patient information and the accuracy of linked medical equipment.
  • Industry 4.0: Protecting automated supply chains and production networks.

Conclusion

The $3.9 million grant is a major step toward quantum readiness for the U.S. military. QuSecure and the U.S. Air Force are developing a model for how government and commercial sector may protect themselves against the decryption risks of the next ten years by emphasizing crypto-agility and the quick implementation of NIST-approved standards. The QuProtect R3 platform is positioned to become a key component of secure communications for the country’s most critical missions, with the goal of IL6 authorization planned for late 2026.
