Quandela and Mila Collaborate to Create Hybrid Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence Technologies

A strategic alliance has been launched by Mila, the Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, and Quandela, a leader in photonic quantum computing in Europe, to explore the potential of hybrid technologies that combine quantum computing and machine learning. By creating and assessing cutting-edge quantum machine learning (QML) models, this partnership seeks to put both companies at the forefront of this rapidly developing technical area.

According to Quandela’s co-founder and COO, Valérian Giesz, this collaboration is a “crucial step” in the company’s quest to investigate tangible uses of quantum computing in artificial intelligence. According to him, Quandela’s proficiency in photonic quantum computing and Mila’s superiority in artificial intelligence can be used to speed up the creation of solutions that would revolutionize numerous industries.

An area with “great potential” is the nexus between artificial intelligence and quantum computing, according to Guillaume Rabusseau, an assistant professor at the University de Montréal and a Core Academic Member at Mila. According to him, this partnership offers a chance to investigate how quantum methods might improve upon and perhaps transform existing machine learning paradigms.

Key Objectives of the Partnership

There will be four primary areas of focus for Quandela and Mila’s collaboration:

  • Benchmarking is the process of contrasting the effectiveness of conventional methods and quantum machine learning (QML) models using structured data.
  • Identifying quantum advantages: Identifying the circumstances in which quantum techniques can provide notable improvements in scalability, precision, and resource usage.
  • Solving training challenges: Creating creative answers to well-known problems in quantum model training.
  • Experimental validation: Combining simulation-based research with experiments on actual quantum hardware to evaluate QML’s potential for useful, real-world applications.

Enhanced Presence in Canada

This collaboration also represents a major advancement for Quandela’s growth in Canada. The installation of a quantum computer in Sherbrooke by Quandela comes after this. This expanding presence, Quandela says, demonstrates its dedication to actively support the growth of Canada’s quantum ecosystem, which is renowned throughout the world for its expertise. The deployment of their quantum technology in Sherbrooke and this collaboration, according to Valérian Giesz, demonstrate Quandela’s long-term ambition for Canada. He expressed gratitude for the strength of the Canadian innovation ecosystem.

About the Organizations

Cloud-accessible quantum processors, ready-to-use quantum computers for datacenters, and algorithm access services for industrial clients are just a few of the state-of-the-art quantum computing products from Quandela, a leading firm in the field. Making quantum computing accessible to solve difficult industrial and societal issues is its goal.

Mila is the largest academic deep learning research center in the world, and it was founded by Professor Yoshua Bengio of the University of Montreal. The Montreal-based organization unites more than 1,300 specialized machine learning researchers. Mila, whose purpose is to be a global center for scientific discoveries that inspire innovation and the growth of AI for the benefit of all, is partially sponsored by the Government of Canada under the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. An internationally renowned non-profit, Mila is well-known for its substantial contributions to deep learning, especially in the areas of generative models, machine translation, object recognition, and language modelling.

Related Developments in Quantum AI

Apart from the Mila collaboration, Quandela has contributed to other noteworthy advancements at the nexus of artificial intelligence and quantum computing:

Partnership with AdvanThink for Payment Fraud Detection:

AdvanThink, a European leader in real-time payment fraud detection, partnered strategically with Quandela. Through the use of AI and quantum computing, this partnership seeks to create high-performance fraud detection models that can detect payment fraud more quickly and accurately. The integration of quantum machine learning algorithms into AdvanThink’s industrial pipelines is presently the subject of a proof of concept. This collaboration will assist in integrating and benchmarking Quandela’s quantum machine learning model, which has already been built and improves credit risk assessment and has great promise for payment fraud detection.

Introduction of the MerLin Framework for Quantum Computing:

Quandela unveiled MerLin, a revolutionary architecture for quantum computing intended for data scientists working in artificial intelligence. The “quantum layer for data scientists” is how MerLin was introduced at NVIDIA GTC Paris. To enable practitioners to quickly prototype hybrid quantum-classical models, it aims to democratize quantum machine learning by abstracting quantum complexity into well-known classical AI operations, such as PyTorch and scikit-learn integrations.

Among MerLin’s major innovations are GPU-optimized simulators that use NVIDIA CUDA-Q to simulate photonic quantum circuits at high performance, benchmark-driven advancements that create repeatable metrics for hybrid algorithms, and a design that prioritizes photonics and is future-proof for next-generation hardware. Researchers from Mila are among the early adopters. To expedite adoption, MerLin will be publicly available.
