DARPA HARQ Selects IonQ for Global Quantum Networking

IonQ and DARPA Partner to Build the “Internet of Quantum”: A New Era of Heterogeneous Networking

IonQ was selected for DARPA’s Heterogeneous Architectures for Quantum (HARQ) effort, advancing the global quantum environment. With this contract, IonQ will lead the creation of a modular, networked quantum architecture that can bridge quantum computing modalities, a significant technological and national security effort.

Bridging the Quantum Divide

The “siloed” nature of existing quantum hardware is one of the biggest obstacles in the area, and the HARQ program is intended to overcome it. As of right now, many kinds of quantum computers such as those that use neutral atoms, trapped ions, or superconducting qubits function according to completely distinct physical principles. Although each modality has its own advantages trapped ions have lengthy coherence durations and great fidelity, while superconducting qubits are famed for their speed they have historically had trouble communicating with one another.

A new class of networked quantum computers is made possible by IonQ as part of the HARQ program. IonQ seeks to provide dependable communication between these various qubit species by utilizing developments in photonic integration and quantum interconnects. In essence, this endeavor aims to build the “backbone” of a global quantum internet, enabling many systems to cooperate in a unified, high-performance design.

The Power of Synthetic Diamond

IonQ’s groundbreaking research on quantum memories is the core of its contribution to the HARQ program. The company’s quantum connection solutions are constructed around these memory. IonQ’s memory are made of quantum-grade synthetic diamond, in contrast to conventional silicon chips.

These diamond-based memory, which can support everything from sophisticated, long-distance entanglement distribution networks to datacenter-scale interconnects, are currently regarded as industry leaders for networking applications. Synthetic diamond was strategically chosen because it offers the strong physical environment required to satisfy HARQ’s challenging goals for operational fidelity and communication speed.

A Track Record of Rapid Innovation

The College Park-based company’s DARPA selection comes after a year of unprecedented achievements. IonQ strengthened its standing as a technological leader and merchant supplier throughout 2025. Among the notable accomplishments were:

  • World-Record Fidelity: IonQ achieved a two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.99%, establishing a new industry standard and showcasing the exceptional accuracy of their trapped-ion devices.
  • Early Milestone Delivery: Three months ahead of plan, the business reached its #AQ 64 (Algorithmic Qubit) milestone on the IonQ Tempo system in 2025.
  • Field-Deployable Networking: IonQ accomplished the first qubit-to-photon frequency conversion in a field-deployable device, which is a significant advancement for practical applications. This makes it possible to send quantum data via the current commercial standard fiber optic infrastructure, which is necessary for any scalable quantum network.

IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi underlined the strategic significance of this partnership. “IonQ’s pioneering quantum interconnect technology can enable modular scalability not only for ion traps, but for a wide range of quantum technologies,” de Masi said. He pointed out that the platform will boost national security by acting as an essential part of both public and commercial sector applications.

Impact Across Industries

The HARQ initiative concentrates on networking and architecture, although IonQ’s technology has far-reaching commercial ramifications. Global leaders are already using the company’s newest generation technology, the IonQ Tempo, to speed up innovation in challenging industries.

Performance outcomes up to 20 times greater than prior benchmarks have been recorded by partners and clients like Amazon Web Services (AWS), NVIDIA, and AstraZeneca. These advancements are propelling advancement in a number of crucial areas:

  • Drug Discovery and Materials Science: Molecular interaction simulation at a level beyond the capabilities of traditional computers.
  • Financial Modeling and Logistics: Risk evaluations and the optimization of intricate international supply networks.
  • Cybersecurity and Defense: Creating quantum-secure communication protocols to shield vital information from potential attacks.

Global Operations and Accessibility

With activities currently covering California, Colorado, Washington, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, South Korea, Switzerland, and Sweden, IonQ, which has its headquarters in Maryland, has quickly extended its reach to satisfy worldwide demand.

IonQ’s quantum computing services are accessible through all major cloud providers to guarantee broad accessibility. While the company simultaneously develops specialized gear for land, sea, air, and space-based applications, this “Quantum Cloud” method enables researchers and businesses to remotely leverage the potential of trapped-ion systems.

The Road Ahead

A multi-year commitment to expanding the limits of quantum communication‘s physical capabilities is represented by the HARQ contract. IonQ is creating the framework for a connected quantum world by concentrating on high-speed interconnects and heterogeneous modularity, rather than just improving computers.

The corporation continues to prioritize achieving ambitious technical objectives that potentially reshape the “backbone” of contemporary computing as it advances alongside DARPA. IonQ is well-positioned to transform the theoretical “Internet of Quantum” into a field-deployed reality because to their synthetic diamond technology and track record of early delivery.
